Rangers Opinion: Gerrard should make a move for Kilmarnock’s Stuart Findlay

According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield Wednesday are interested in making a £1 million bid for Kilmarnock star Stuart Findlay in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been a regular for Steve Clarke’s side this season and has helped his team to 4th in the Scottish Premiership standings, with his impressive performances putting him on the verge of call-up to Scotland’s senior squad.

Having graduated from the youth academy at Celtic, Findlay failed to make his mark in the first-team at Parkhead and spent time on loan at Dumbarton and Kilmarnock.

He moved across the border to join Newcastle United in 2016 but things didn’t really work out for him at Tyneside and he never went on to make a Premier League appearance for the Magpies.

The 23-year-old once again had a loan stint at Kilmarnock and joined the Scottish outfit permanently after impressing with his solid displays at the back.

Findlay has made a total of 26 appearances for Kilmarnock in all competitions this season and his stocks have certainly risen, being an integral part of a defence that has conceded 27 goals from 29 games in the Scottish Premiership. Only Celtic and Rangers have conceded fewer goals this season.

To put things into perspective, Stuart Findlay would certainly fit the bill at Sheffield Wednesday but Rangers can bag a massive coup if they manage to beat off competition from the EFL Championship outfit to land the strong and powerful defender.

The Gers need to bolster their options at the back in the summer and Findlay, being a homegrown talent, would find it easier to hit the ground running and make an instant impact.

Things do not look too bright for Rangers this season, with the Gers second in the standings and 8 points adrift of archrivals Celtic. It looks quite certain that Steven Gerrard’s side will have to wait at least another season to end their trophy drought and they should add a few fresh faces to their squad next summer to enhance their title hopes.

Defence is one area which is in dire need of some investment next summer, with star man Joe Worrall set to return to Nottingham Forest at the end of the campaign.

Connor Goldson has looked a bit shaky at times while Gareth McAuley, 39, is likely to hang up his boots sooner or later. Nikola Katic is another option for Gerrard at the heart of the defence but Rangers need to add more depth to their options at the back.

Standing at 6ft.3 inches with a strong and powerful frame, Findlay is capable of dominating his offensive counterparts with his physicality and aerial ability, whilst also possessing above-average game reading ability and good composure.

He has also won 32 caps for Scotland at all youth levels, which speaks volumes of his talent and potential.

Still only 23, Findlay is yet to enter his prime as a centre-back and Rangers should invest in him as a long-term solution to their defensive problems.
