Rangers should offer Ravel Morrison an escape route
According to Calciomercato, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is interested in signing Lazio’s former England U21 international midfielder Ravel Morrison before the transfer deadline.
The same report claims that Morrison has not featured for Lazio for ages and has not been listed in the club’s Serie A squad for the ongoing season after spending time on loan at Mexican club Atlas the last term.
Steven Gerrard is prepared to take the risk of providing the hugely-talented Morrison with an opportunity to resurrect his career which is in tatters at the moment. (h/t Calciomercato)
A product of Manchester United’s youth academy, Morrison was held in high regard by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. However, his career never took off after he joined West Ham in 2012. Despite putting in some really impressive performances for the Hammers, Morrison was loaned out to Championship side QPR for the second half of the 2013-14. The 25-year-old was a part of the QPR team that won the finals of the Championship playoffs in 2014.
While it would be fair to say that he didn’t get enough chances to establish himself at West Ham, Morrison deserves a fair share of the blame for not making the most of his limited opportunities.
Frustrated by his lack of opportunities in the Premier League, he made a move to Lazio in 2015 but things got worse for him in Italy as Morrison made only 4 substitute appearances for Lazio in the Serie A in the 2015-16 season before being loaned out to QPR and Mexican club Atlas for the subsequent campaigns.
Quite clearly, playing in different leagues and under the philosophies of different managers hasn’t helped Morrison at all. Stability is an indispensable factor in the developmental stage of any young footballer, and Morrison just hasn’t had that.
His eccentric approach to the game hasn’t reaped any rewards for him and a footballer, who was once tipped to take the Premier League by storm, has ended up virtually nowhere.
However, the positive thing for him is that he still has time on his side. Still only 25, Morrison can definitely turn his fortunes around and Steven Gerrard should not hesitate to offer the forgotten youngster an escape route this January.
Essentially an attacking midfielder by trade, Morrison caught the eye as a youngster with his exceptional technique, wonderful close control and mesmerizing dribbling skills. He has the natural ability to cover every blade of grass in the middle of the park, picking up the ball in the deep areas, embarking on powerful solo runs and dribbling at pace.
To add to that, he has a lot of creativity about himself, picking out the right pass with his incredible vision. Furthermore, he is also a good finisher from inside as well as outside the box.
To put things into perspective, Ravel Morrison would be a good signing for Rangers. The Gers are currently level on points with Celtic at the top of the table after a 1-0 victory over their archrivals in the Old Firm derby.
Alfredo Morelos has spearheaded the attack with Scott Arfield and Daniel Candeias in creative roles behind. Youngster Glenn Middleton has shown glimpses of his brilliance as well but Rangers need someone who can turn the game on its head with moments of individual brilliance.

And Ravel Morrison is certainly a good option for that purpose. His presence can certainly be a boon for the Gers in the second half of the campaign as they look to end Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership. That said, they should not hesitate to provide the immensely talented 25-year-old with an opportunity to resurrect his career.
