Naseem Hamed aka Prince Naseem is a British former professional boxer. He is one of the most well-known faces in the history of British Boxing. He is a southpaw who, at 5’4 ½”, has fought in the Featherweight, Super Bantamweight, and Bantamweight divisions.
He is often called Prince Naseem by fans. He is well-known for his antics and entertaining ring entrances including coming in on a flying carpet, in a Chevrolet Impala, and re-enacting the video of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
Naseem started his professional boxing career in 1992 under the flyweight category where he won over Vincenzo Belcastro over twelve rounds and become the holder of the European bantamweight title at just the age of 20.
He defended the title once and then, in 1994, went on to win the WBC International super bantamweight title in Sheffield against Freddy Cruz in six rounds. Hamed signed for Frank Warren and went on to win against stricter competitors in Enrique Angels and Juan Polo Pérez, knocking them out within only two rounds.
Despite not fighting a single weight in the weight division, Naseem was named the WBO number one featherweight contender in 1995, a highly controversial announcement. He defeated Wales’ defending WBO champion Steve Robinson in front of Robinson’s home crowd at Cardiff Arms Park.
Throughout his career, Naseem has held multiple featherweight world championships, including the WBO title from 1995 to 2000; the IBF title in 1997; and the WBC title from 1999 to 2000. He also reigned as lineal champion from 1998 to 2001; IBO champion from 2002 to 2003; and the European bantamweight title from 1994 to 1995.

A remarkable career for Hamed came to an end with a match against Manuel Calvo for the IBO World featherweight title. Hamed won unconvincingly on points, looking sluggish and uninterested, and was booed by the fans. He took retirement after that and mentioned that it was primarily due to chronic problems with his hands, including multiple fractures and injuries.
Hamed is ranked the best British featherweight of all time by BoxRec. He is even ranked as the 35th greatest European pound-for-pound boxer of all time and the 17th greatest British fighter of all time. ESPN ranked Hamed at number 22 on its list of the top 25 fighters, pound for pound, of the last 25 years. The Ring magazine ranked Hamed the 11th greatest British boxer of all time and also the 46th greatest puncher of all time.
