Premier League Opinion: Top 5 full-backs from the Premier League season

Football is a sport that is forever advancing in terms of gameplay as well as tactical application and one position has recently risen to massive prominence to all of Europe’s biggest clubs. While the full-back position has always had its own importance, in recent years, it has grown into the one of the most integral positions for any side.

While the other European leagues do place an added impetus on full-backs now, it is in the Premier League where this trend has truly taken its toll. Attacking wing-backs are aplenty in England and some of the talents that have been coming up at the smaller English clubs offer massive potential too.

The biggest example for this would certainly be Premier League runners-up Liverpool who have often depended on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson for attacking contributions. Smaller clubs like Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace have also made huge steps forward on this front.

Here are the 5 best full-back from the Premier League season:

5- Yan Valery

The youngster stepped up to the plate when Southampton were facing an apparent crisis in the full-back position. Despite his tender age, he showed great maturity after earning himself a well-deserved starting tole in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attacking set-up. With a massive future ahead of him, Valery was one of this season’s rising stars.

Luke Shaw

4- Luke Shaw

Manchester United’s season was filled with massive ups and downs and although things did get better since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over the reins, it seems like they’ve dropped back to square-one having finished in 6th place.

While some of their football has been calamitous, English full-back Luke Shaw has been a shining light in this squad of apparent misfits.

3- Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The Crystal Palace youngster has quite simply taken the Premier League by storm this season. His darting forward runs combined with his amazing ability to pick out the right cross time and again make him an absolute horror to defend against.

Still very young, Wan-Bissaka has shown his quality on multiple occasions this season and has been one of Palace’s most important players as well.

Matt Doherty

2- Matt Doherty

When Wolverhampton Wanderers gained promotion back to the Premier League last season, nobody would’ve excepted them to finish their first year back at the big stage in 7th place.

Unofficially labelled the best of the rest, Wolves have played some mind-blowing football at times and a lot of their attacking threat came through Doherty who got 7 assists and 4 goals this term.

1- Andy Robertson

The stand-out wing-back of the season is Andy Robertson and there can be absolutely no arguments here.

The 25-year-old has made the starting role his own at Anfield and doesn’t look like he’s going to get uprooted anytime soon. With 11 assists in the league this season, the Scot has been the league’s best full-back by a fairly big distance this season.
