Leeds United must surely sign Juan Foyth on loan

EFL Championship outfit Leeds United are plotting a January move to sign Tottenham Hotspur youngster Juan Foyth on loan till the end of the season, according to reports from Argentina AS.

The 20-year-old Foyth is reportedly considering an exit in the winter transfer window from the North London outfit, with playing time coming towards him at a premium. (h/t Evening Standard) And Leeds United are prepared to offer him a way out by taking him on loan for six months.

Foyth joined Tottenham Hotspur last summer from Estudiantes in his homeland but has found himself warming the benches more often than not. Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier are all ahead of him in the pecking order at the North London outfit.

In his debut campaign with the Lilywhites, the Argentine starlet made just eight appearances across all competitions, none of which came in the Premier League. Things have failed to improve for the youngster in the ongoing season as well, with a pre-season injury derailing his preparations.

Having recovered fitness now, the 20-year-old is yet to make a single appearance for Mauricio Pochettino’s side so far in the 2018/19 campaign. He was also omitted from the club’s squad for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. And the lack of first-team opportunities has prompted the player to consider a temporary move away from Spurs in the January transfer window. (h/t Evening Standard)

Leeds were interested in making a move for the defender back in the summer as well. (h/t Fox Sports) The Whites have options in the heart of the defence in captain Liam Cooper, Pontus Jansson, Gaetano Berardi along with academy product Conor Shaughnessy.

However, with the 22-year-old Shaughnessy spending a lot of time on the treatment table, Leeds could use more defensive reinforcements in the winter window to ramp up their bid for promotion back to the Premier League.

A natural ball-playing defender, Foyth is blessed with good technical abilities and range of distribution, which enables him to step out of the backline and participate in build-up play. He also possesses a decent turn of pace that allows him to cover ground quickly in situations where he is caught higher up the pitch.

The 20-year-old is also a strong tackler and while he may not possess the most imposing physique, he is more than handy in aerial duels at both ends of the pitch.

Filled with immense potential, the Argentine fits into the type of players Bielsa usually prefers. While he may have struggled to break into the Spurs’ first-team, he certainly could make an important contribution for Leeds in the second half of the campaign. Hence, if there is a possibility of signing the defender in January on loan, Leeds should not hesitate.
