Paula Badosa Career

Paula Badosa Gibert aka. Paula Badosa started playing tennis at the age of 7. Soon Badosa started playing junior tennis. She is a former junior world No. 8.

At the age of 14, Badosa made her debut at the ITF Junior Circuit in September 2012. Then in February 2014, Badosa won her first junior singles title at the Grade-1 Mediterranee Avenir in Casablanca. In April 2014, she won the doubles title at a Grade-1 tournament, the Trofeo Juan Carlos Ferrero in Villena.  

Badosa finished runner-up at the European Junior Championships in singles. She also finished runner–up in doubles in the same tournament. Finally, Badosa won the girls’ singles title at the 2015 French Open, which marked the end of Badosa’s junior career. In juniors she won three singles and one doubles titles on the circuit.

In 2015, Badosa finally turned pro. But, Badosa made her debut on the ITF Women’s Circuit in May 2012 in Getxo. In November 2013, she won her first title in Sant Jordi.

Then in March 2015, Badosa made her first breakthrough after receiving a wildcard for the main draw at the Premier Mandatory Miami Open. In the same tournament, she recorded her first two match wins on the WTA Tour.

In 2018, Badosa played the 2018 Morocco Open, where she reached the quarterfinals. Then in September 2018, Badosa won the Open de Valencia. In the final of Open de Valencia, Badosa defeated Aliona Bolsova.

At the 2019 Australian Open, Badosa made her Grand Slam main-draw debut. However, she lost in the first round. In July 2019, Badosa reached her first WTA semifinal at the Palermo Open. Badosa followed this by reaching the semifinals of the WTA Challenger Karlsruhe Open. Subsequently, her recent results helped her to debut in the top 100. She then reached the quarterfinals at the Korea Open.

In 2020, Badosa recorded her first Grand Slam match-win at the Australian Open. She defeated Johanna Larsson in the first round. She then lost to Petra Kvitová. In September 2020, she reached the semifinals at the İstanbul Cup. Her biggest result of 2020 came at the French Open, where she reached her first round of 16 at a major tournament.

In May 2021, Badosa reached her first WTA 1000 semifinal at the Madrid Open. Notably, Badosa made history by becoming the first Spanish woman to reach the semifinals in the tournament history. The result of Madrid Open helped Badosa reach a new then career-high of world No. 42.

Then at the Serbia Open, Badosa reached a third straight clay-court semifinal. As a result, she entered the top 40 for the first time in her career. Badosa also went on to win her maiden title at the Serbia Open after Ana Konjuh retired injured in the final.

Further, Badosa reached the quarterfinals of the 2021 French Open. This was the first time in her career that Badosa moved into the quarterfinals of a major tournament. She lost the quarterfinal to Tamara Zidanšek.

On 23 August 2021, following her second WTA 1000 quarterfinal at the Cincinnati Open, Badosa reached a then career-high in singles of world No. 26.

Then on 17 October 2021, Badosa defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final to win the Indian Wells tournament, for her first WTA 1000 title. Following the Indian Wells successful result, Badosa made her top 10 debut on 8 November 2021.

In 2022, Badosa claimed her third career title at the 2022 Sydney Tennis Classic. She defeated Barbora Krejčíková in the final. With the win, Badosa rose to a new then career-high ranking of No. 6.

At the 2022 Australian Open, Badosa reached the fourth round for the first time. In the fourth round, Badosa lost against Madison Keys. Badosa then had early exits at Dubai and Doha. However, Badosa reached the semifinals at Indian Wells and the quarterfinals at Miami Open. These results and Ashleigh Barty’s retirement helped Badosa to reach a then-new career-high ranking of No. 3.

Then, after Badosa’s semifinal showing at the 2022 Women’s Stuttgart Open, Badosa rose to a new career-high of World No. 2 on 25 April 2022.

Since then, Badosa’s form dipped terribly, and a year later, she is out of the top 30, ranked 34 currently.
