While he was previously working as the executive director of WWE Raw, he was recently discharged from those duties and is currently contracted with the promotion as a performer only. Paul is believed to make a handsome $2million-a-year.

Paul Heyman Early Career

At a very young age, Heyman showed his entrepreneurship skills, as he ran a successful celebrity and sports memorabilia mail order business from out of his home when he was just 11.

A short stint as a photojournalist followed, before he worked at a couple of radio stations, before he once again turned to photography, while writing for wrestling publications such as Pro-Wrestling Illustrated.

At 19, he was hired by Studio 54 in New York, where he grew from a photographer to a producer and promoter in a short time. In the late 80s, Heyman turned to manage wrestlers, starting on the Northeast Independent circuit, before switching to Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF), where he went by the name ‘Paul E. Dangerously’.

After CWF was absorbed by Jim Crockett Promotions, he moved to Continental Wrestling Association (CWA), before stints at American Wrestling Association (AWA) and Continental Wrestling Federation (CWF) followed.

Heyman then joined WCW where he worked as an announcer alongside Jim Ross for a brief period, before returning to a managerial capacity in 1991.

Two years later, he moved to Eastern Championship Wrestling, which later became known as Extreme Championship Wrestling. He was the creative presence behind the promotion from 1993 till 2001, when the promotion went bankrupt.

Paul Heyman WWE Career

In 2001, after ECW went defunct, Heyman joined WWE, initially as a commentator, before he grew into the lead writer for SmackDown from July 2002 to February 2003. Around the same time, he took over the role of managing Brock Lesnar, who rose to great heights alongside Heyman, before the latter turned on him.

Heyman also enjoyed a run as the general manager of SmackDown between 2003 and 2004. The following year, he was given the reins of Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which was the developmental territory maintained by WWE.

Heyman also relaunched ECW, as a third brand under the WWE flagship. While the brand saw success initially, a drop in ratings and creative disagreements with Vince McMahon eventually conspired to Heyman exiting the company in late 2006.

Six years later, in 2012, Heyman returned to WWE, back working as the manager and ‘advocate’ to Brock Lesnar, who made his big return to the promotion. Paul E. also formed an alliance with CM Punk and was a constant presence alongside the Straight Edge Superstar as he rose to great heights, before eventually turning on him.

While he has mainly been by the side of Lesnar in his second stint with the promotion, Heyman also worked briefly with the likes of Curtis Axel, Ryback and Cesaro as well.

In 2019, Heyman was promoted to the role of Executive Director on Raw. However, he lasted in the position for just about a year, before being removed by WWE. Upon the return of Roman Reigns in 2020 as a heel, Paul Heyman aligned himself with Reigns. The duo then went onto form the stable, Bloodline with Jimmy and Jey Uso. Heyman also had a brief storyline with Brock Lesnar but that did not last long. Currently, he is managing Reigns and The Bloodline, where The Usos are the combined Raw and Smackdown Tag team champions whereas Roman Reigns is the WWE and Universal champion. Under the guidance of Heyman, Reigns is the longest reigning, defending undisputed champion.

Paul Heyman Family

Heyman was born on September 11, 1965, in Westchester County, New York to Sulamita (mother) and Richard S. Heyman (father). His father was a prominent personal injury attorney and World War II veteran,  while his mother was a Holocaust survivor.

Paul Heyman Relationships

Paul Heyman was married to Marla Heyman for a long time, but the pair have parted ways. They have two children together – Azalea Heyman, who was born in 2002 and Jacob Heyman, who was born a couple of years later in 2004.

Paul Heyman Other Media

Heyman is the co-founder of the award-winning New York City firm The Looking4Larry Agency. The firm broke new ground with its initial campaign with EA, THQ video games, 2K Sports, and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas. He also worked closely with Brock Lesnar, collaborating for his autobiography, Death Clutch: My Story of Determination, Domination, and Survival.

Heyman has appeared in the video games WWE Day of Reckoning, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw, and the entire WWE 2K series starting from 2K14 to 2K22.

The 54-year-old appeared in the 2002’s movie Rollerball. He also starred in the movie adaptation of the long-running Off-Broadway show Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding.

Did Paul Heyman leave WWE?

As mentioned previously, Heyman enjoyed a run as the executive director of Raw for around an year. He was stripped of those duties in 2020, with Bruce Pritchard assuming the role for both Raw and SmackDown.

WWE claimed that the decision was taken in an effort to streamline both the Raw and SmackDown writing teams into one group. However, creative differences with McMahon, once again, are believed to be the reasons behind his dismissal. Raw’s ratings, since, have been on a nosedive.

He was then reduced to his “Advocate” role for Brock Lesnar. With the Beast Incarnate not appearing on television since his Wrestlemania 36 defeat to Drew McIntyre, Heyman hasn’t been seen much either. With the absence of Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman allied with Roman Reigns and gave birth to the stable, The Bloodline.

While Heyman has been removed from the directorial role, he is likely to be kept on the books as a performer given his exceptional skills on the mic.
