Basketball Without Borders

Luc Mbah a Moute, whose parents lived in Bafia, about two miles (three kilometers) from St. Andrew’s, discovered him as a player at a nearby camp. Siakam first attended Mbah a Moute’s camp in 2011 before graduating from St. Andrew’s in 2012. The following year, he was selected to take part in the Basketball Without Borders camp. He had no prior basketball experience, but his obvious athleticism and high level of energy drew attention.

Raptors president Masai Ujiri, who was in attendance at the camp, recalled that “his effort was memorable.” Siakam arrived in the country at 18 with Mbah a Moute as his mentor. He travelled from camp to camp honing his skills before settling in Lewisville, Texas, and enrolling in God’s Academy.

Siakam attended this prep school but was not well known or qualified. However, New Mexico State University was interested in him because of his global network and the fourteen spots on his roster reserved for players born abroad.

College

Siakam began his studies at New Mexico State University in 2013. After being forced to redshirt the 2013-14 season because of injury, he was named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year by the 2014-15 season. He was named the WAC Player of the Year unanimously in 2015-16 after averaging 20.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks in 34 games. 

On April 19, 2016, Siakam announced his intention to enter the NBA draught, foregoing his final two years of college eligibility.

Professional Career

The Toronto Raptors selected Siakam with the 27th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft on June 23. On July 9, he was given a rookie scale contract. The Raptors’ first rookie started since Jonas Valaninas did so in 2012, he made his debut on October 2 against the Detroit Pistons, contributing 4 points and 9 rebounds in 21 minutes.

While still playing for the Raptors, he led Toronto’s affiliate team to the Finals, where they defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 2-1. He was named D-League Finals MVP after averaging 23 points and 9 rebounds in that series.

In his second NBA season, Siakam established himself as a valuable bench player for Toronto. He set a career high with 20 points against the Golden State Warriors on October 25, 2017. In 2017-18, Siakam’s offensive rating increased by four points, compared to seven points lower in his rookie season.

Siakam emerged as a two-way force entering the 2018-19 season, averaging 16.9 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

He helped the Raptors win their first NBA championship by defeating the Warriors in six games. Later that month, Siakam was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2018-19 season. On October 19, 2019, Siakam and Toronto agreed to a four-year, $130 million extension.

Also on October 19, 2022, the team defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-105 under Siakam’s leadership. On October 21, Siakam recorded his fourth triple-double of the season in a 109-105 loss to the Brooklyn Nets, tallying 37 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. Siakam also established a new Raptors record with multiple triple-doubles of at least 30 points.
