Early career

Salido began his professional boxing career at the age of 15 in 1996 and suffered numerous defeats, five of which were by knockout. He hasn’t lost a bout, though, since March 2000. Salido made a powerful comeback by defeating Lamont Pearson on short notice after losing to Alejandro González and defeating Regilio Tuur in November 2001. As a result, the sanctioning bodies ranked Salido as a title contender.

Salido achieved an undefeated nine-fight streak after defeating Pearson, but lost to IBF and WBA featherweight champion, Juan Manuel Marquez, in 2004. Salido appeared passive in the early and middle rounds, allowing Marquez to take the lead, but made a late effort to win the final rounds. Despite this, he lost by unanimous decision. Salido redeemed himself by defeating Rogers Mtagwa, earning a shot at another title.

Then, after defeating Robert Guerrero, he was awarded the IBF featherweight title. However, the title was later revoked due to a positive steroid test, which the fighter vigorously denied. He defeated Marty Robbins upon his comeback, and then he stopped Hector Julio Avila to win an eliminator for the IBF title.

Professional career

Salido faced Cristobal Cruz in 2008 for the IBF title he had to relinquish due to his ban. Salido got off to a fantastic start by winning the opening and middle rounds despite losing the fight on a split decision. After that, he triumphed over two opponents of a lower caliber before exacting revenge on Cruz in a rematch.

Salido won via unanimous decision and became a world champion for the first time at the age of 30. In September 2010, he faced WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa in a unification bout but lost a 12-round unanimous decision.

When he overcame the unbeaten WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel López to capture the title in April 2011, Orlando Salido pulled off a tremendous upset. Despite the first four rounds of the fight being competitive, Salido dropped López in the fifth and began an onslaught in the eighth, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

The next opponent for Salido’s championship defense was Japanese boxer Kenichi Yamaguchi, who he outboxed and ultimately stopped in the eleventh round by TKO. Salido stated that he would like to face López again. Salido battled against Weng Haya in a non-title fight in December 2011, but he eventually came back to knock Haya out in the eighth round.

Salido won against Lopez to defend his WBO title in 2012 but was knocked down in the fifth round. He later won the fight in the tenth round after knocking down Lopez with a hard three-punch combination. Salido lost to Garcia in 2013 and fought Cruz for the vacant title, winning after stopping Cruz in the seventh round.

Salido faced renowned amateur boxer Lomachenko in his first WBO title defense. Despite being overweight and having lost his belt prior to the fight, Salido prevailed through a split decision. Numerous observers accused Salido of purposefully underperforming and throwing too many low blows. After failing to make weight for his previous bout, Salido stepped up to the super featherweight category and defeated Kokietgym in the eleventh round to claim the WBO Interim super featherweight championship.

Salido lost his WBO title to Román Martínez in a unanimous decision in April 2015, after being knocked down twice and losing a point for a low blow. In their rematch in September, the fight was scored as a split-decision draw. Francisco Vargas won the WBC super featherweight title bout against Salido in June 2016 by a majority decision, keeping the belt.

In October, a fight between Orlando Salido and WBC champion Miguel Berchelt was being discussed, but Berchelt couldn’t fight due to an injury. Salido instead fought Miguel Román on December 9 for the vacant WBC super featherweight interim title but lost via 9th-round TKO. This was the first time Salido had been stopped in over 17 years. He announced his retirement from boxing after the fight. The fight was watched by an average of 534,000 viewers on HBO.
