Why Manchester United must tie down Anthony Martial down to a new contract

According to The Telegraph, Anthony Martial could sign a new five-year contract with Manchester United, regardless of how Jose Mourinho feels about the player. The Frenchman has been backed by Ed Woodward and the 22-year-old is eager to stay at the club (h/t The Telegraph).

Jose Mourinho did not want to include Martial in his plans for the current season and wanted to offload the player in favour of new signings. However, his transfer moves were not granted by the board, meaning the Frenchman will continue to ply his trade at Old Trafford (h/t The Telegraph).

Martial joined United for £36m on a four-year deal from AS Monaco back in 2015 and made his debut in the same season. He has made 136 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 36 goals across all competitions.

Martial made an immediate impact in the Premier League in his debut season, making 31 appearances where he accumulated 11 goals. However, Jose Mourinho mostly utilized the Frenchman as a substitute in the previous season.

However, the initiative to tie down Martial to Old Trafford should work wonders for the Red Devils. In Martial, 22, Manchester United have a future star.

Martial may not be the tallest man on the pitch but he makes up for it with his electric pace and breathtaking dribbles. A versatile attacker, he has the ability to play on the wings and as a centre-forward. He is good with his technique and has the ability to take on defenders single-handedly. The Frenchman can deliver good crosses from the flanks often cuts inside to fire piledrivers with his stronger right foot.

Good goal-scorers are not easy to find and United have Martial, who is already a prolific scorer at the age of 22. He is definitely an asset to the club, alongside Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

Given that the club wants him to stay, Mourinho should start utilizing Martial to change United’s fortunes. He has been guilty of underusing both Martial and Rashford. Given the fact that new signing Fred hasn’t done justice to his selection and Romelu Lukaku has squandered a lot of chances, Mourinho should provide more opportunities to Martial and Rashford.

If Martial, Rashford, and Lingard can link up in the attacking third, United may succeed in creating more chances. Furthermore, the decision to stay put at Old Trafford could work wonders for Martial’s career. Manchester United have always had a reputation for contributing to the growth of youngsters and there can be no better place for the Frenchman to flourish.
