Why Stoke City should go all out to sign James McClean from West Brom

James McClean wants a move from West Bromwich Albion to fellow-relegated club Stoke City. The Republic of Ireland international has skipped the Baggies’ pre-season training camp in Scotland, which will warrant him an internal disciplinary action from the club.

The 29-year-old is a feisty character who possesses the required tools to fit in at the Bet365 stadium. The Potters are already looking to replace their star man Xherdan Shaqiri, who is adamant to stay in the Premier League despite getting relegated with Stoke.

Let us take a look at McClean’s attributes and conclude as to why it will be a dexterous move for Stoke City to sign him.

Player Analysis and Scouting – James McClean

Age – 29

Position – Attacking Midfielder (Left or Right)

Current Club – West Bromwich Albion

McClean is a hard-working player who will give everything for the team on the pitch. Although his stats don’t reflect the true story, he is a willing runner behind the defence which helps him stretch the game and become an outlet for counter-attacks.

However, his final product can be quite frustrating for numerous reasons. In fact, he has scored just 5 goals and provided 7 assists in 112 appearances for West Brom. Hence, the Irishman hasn’t been a regular starter at the Hawthorns and it is not difficult to see why.

Stoke City might benefit by signing someone who can make runs behind and act as an egress for their counter-attacking football. In spite of his poor final pass – a thing which can be improved by correct coaching – McClean is a handy player to have in the squad. He can make defensive tracking runs when needed, which will be useful in Championship football.

Conclusion

Therefore, Gary Rowett must make an attempt to land McClean and start a renaissance period at Stoke. The Potters must get back into the Premier League at all cost and the West Brom star can certainly help them.

The 29-year-old can make others perform by putting in some back-breaking displays. In addition to that, he is always willing to put in a solid shift for the team.  He may not be the most aesthetic winger but he can be effective when needed.
