Watford should sign Hoffenheim’s Kerem Demirbay in January

After a brilliant start to the season with four wins out of their first four games, Watford just seem to have lost momentum. The Hornets squandered loads of good chances in front of goal and suffered a shock 1-0 defeat the hands of Newcastle United last week in the Premier League.

The fans might argue that 1-0 wasn’t a fair result but the Hornets have only themselves to blame for missing such clear-cut chances. To make matters worse, they could only muster a 1-1 draw against Southampton over the weekend.

Javi Gracia has done a fantastic job as a manager and the team has shown a lot of character under his stewardship. In fact, all the players have gelled effectively as a unit and each one of them seems to know their exact role in the team.

The return of Gerard Deulofeu from injury has been a massive boost for Watford and the former Barcelona man has added that guile and cutting-edge to their attack with his creativity. Roberto Pereyra has done exceptionally well this season, scoring five goals and Issac Success has contributed a lot with his energy and industrious style of play.

However, Watford do not have a quality central attacking midfielder in their squad. The central midfield duo of Abdoulaye Doucoure and Etienne Capoue has been instrumental to their success but both of them are essentially defensive midfielders by trade. Watford need to add more variety and depth to their midfield options to challenge for a top ten finish or even a Europa League spot this season.

They are currently in the top ten but lack of quality options in their ranks might prove to be a major roadblock in the latter stages of the season when the injuries start to creep in.

To put things into perspective, Watford should look to table a bid for TSG Hoffenheim’s Kerem Demirbay. The 25-year-old German midfielder has been capped twice by the national team and was a part of the German squad that participated in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Demirbay has made four appearances in the Bundesliga this term and has impressed a lot with his all-around performances. The 25-year-old has averaged 2 shots and 3 key passes per game in the Bundesliga and has carried his glorious form into the UEFA Champions League as well, putting in an impressive shift in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester City and also registered an assist in the 3-3 draw against Lyon.

A sharp, agile, nimble-footed and technically-gifted central attacking midfielder, Demirbay is adept at weaving his way past defenders in the midfield.

Blessed with adaptability and vision, the German-Turk midfielder is capable of operating in a box-to-box role as well. His main attributes are his ability to press the opposition off the ball and his quick decision-making to release the perfect pass at the correct moment. He is also a decent crosser of the ball and tends to drift wide at times to put the ball into the box for the strikers to attack. In other words, he is Hoffenheim’s star man.
