Tying Max Aarons down to a new contract is a great move for Norwich

Norwich City made a big announcement during the international break, confirming that young defender Max Aarons has signed a new contract with the club. It is indeed a great move considering the youngster was drawing interest from Premier League heavyweights Arsenal and Chelsea. (h/t Eastern Daily Press)

The 18-year-old has had a breakthrough season at Carrow Road this term. Aarons had only signed a new deal with the Canaries in June (h/t Eastern Daily Press), extending his stay till 2021. However, he has now signed another extension, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2023. (h/t Eastern Daily Press)

Aarons joined Norwich back in the summer of 2016, joining from the Luton Town youth setup. He was initially a part of the Canaries’ U18 setup but only a year later, he was bumped up to the reserves. His rapid rise through the ranks did not go unnoticed as Norwich City boss Daniel Farke handed him his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup game against Stevenage FC in August this term.

Since then, the 18-year-old has made nine appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as the first-choice right-back for the Canaries. His progress saw him break into the England U19 setup as well, making two appearances.

A modern-day full-back who can play on the right and left, the 18-year-old has made an impression with his pace and the energy that allows him to run up and down the flanks all day long. A good passer and an even better dribbler of the ball, the Englishman is an asset when it comes to overlapping down the flanks while attacking and has demonstrated solid defensive nous in his short time as a first-team member as well.

Aarons may have made just nine senior appearances in his career so far, but in his short time, the starlet has shown great promise and potential and clearly has the abilities to make it at the biggest stage. And by tying him down to a new long-term deal at the club, Norwich have ensured that he continues his progress at Carrow Road.

And when the big clubs do come calling, the Canaries have protected themselves since the long-term contract will fetch them a hefty transfer fee – similar to what happened with James Maddison in the summer. All in all, a great move by the Championship outfit to secure the player’s services on a long-term basis.
