Manchester United Opinion: Why Manchester United need to beat Real Madrid to Milan Skriniar
Spanish news outlet AS English has reported that Real Madrid are set to win the race for Inter Milan center-back Milan Skriniar. The Los Blancos are looking to re-invent their team and believe that the Slovakian star is a big part of that future.
However, given Manchester United’s interest in the past (Manchester Evening News), that is a move the Red Devils need to hijack. At the moment, for Manchester United, barring Swedish star Victor Lindelof, no-one has lit up the Premier League.
Even the likes of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have looked shaky at times. For a club looking to re-establish its dominance in England and the European stage, they cannot have a shaky backline. That is where Milan Skriniar steps in and the Slovakian star can improve any side.
While he only joined the Nerazzurri last summer, Skriniar soon established himself as the first choice. Furthermore, under Luciano Spalletti, the 23-year-old has grown into a world-class defensive star. That has seen him come under scrutiny and even scouted by the likes of Barcelona (ESPN), Manchester City (Daily Mail) and now, Real Madrid themselves.
For Manchester United, however, he would be perfect since he is the best of both worlds. An old-school defender at heart, Skriniar has the physical and athletic attributes of a modern centre-back.
Tall and fast enough to outrace even the fastest strikers, Skriniar is strong and yet agile enough to break across in time to make a game-winning tackle.
But the young centre-back’s ingenuity and intelligence to cut out a move before it even happens is incredible. A lot like Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini, the 23-year-old knows what will happen before it does. That eerily reminds a few watching of former Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic.
That combined with his composure and willingness to receive the ball, makes him the perfect man to lead the Red Devils into the future. It’s a move that will undoubtedly only do good for Manchester United and while they will have to battle Real Madrid for it, it’s a move that they need to make.
