Why Manchester City must immediately offer fresh terms to Pep Guardiola

Under Pep Guardiola’s guidance, Manchester City have reached great heights in recent times. With cash-rich reserves, the Sky Blues dominated the Premier League under the likes of Roberto Mancini as well as Manuel Pellegrini.

While the former managers did work wonders at the Etihad, Guardiola has certainly changed the whole complexion of the team. Barring the elusive Champions League title, City have conquered all domestic competitions. Despite enjoying a good run, the Manchester outfit find themselves in hot water this season.

The defending champions are currently placed 3rd in the league table with 28 points in 13 games. While those numbers do not look bad on paper, title rivals Liverpool are already perched atop the standings with a whopping 37 points.

The fact that the Reds have already attained such a wide gap should be a major concern for Guardiola and co.

Earlier in November, a report from German newspaper Bild (h/t The Sun) had claimed that Bayern Munich were interested in a reunion with their former manager. With City already facing numerous problems, the prospect of losing Guardiola does sound rather dangerous.

However, during a recent interview, as reported by Sky Sports, the Spaniard claimed that he will see out his contract which runs until 2021. While that is reassuring, the City board must go all out to ensure he extends his stay at the Etihad.

Prior to Guardiola’s magic, City were never one among the most iconic football clubs, despite doing incredibly well. Although they had the financial muscle to attract big names, the club lacked a soul of sorts. But since the 48-year-old tactician’s appointment, things have changed drastically in a positive manner.

Not only did the club have younger talents breaking into the first-team, but the Cityzens also found modern-day legends in the likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and the recently departed Vincent Kompany.

Guardiola also had a huge role in shaping the likes of Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane, both of whom have evolved into fearsome attackers. While some may argue that he is yet to lay his hands on a Champions League trophy, Pep continues to be City’s best bet for winning it someday.

Thus, the City hierarchy must leave no stone unturned to ensure that he stays put at the Etihad on a long-term basis.
