Norwich City Opinion: Canaries should snap up Issac Hayden from Newcastle
According to reports from the Eastern Daily Press, Norwich City have joined the race to sign Isaac Hayden at the end of the season.
The Easter Daily Press reports that Hayden is expected to head for the exit door at Tyneside in the summer to be closer to his partner, who has recently had a baby.
Hayden pushed for an exit from the north-east back in January, only to see his request turned down by manager Rafael Benitez as the Magpies didn’t have enough time to sign a replacement. The 24-year-old, however, is expected to move to the south at the end of the current season, despite being contracted with Newcastle until the summer of 2021.
The same source understands that Carrow Road has been mooted as a possible destination for the former Arsenal academy graduate, as the Canaries look to build a squad capable of beating the drop in the Premier League.
Hayden, who rose through the youth ranks at Arsenal and had a loan spell at Hull City in the Championship earlier in his career, joined Newcastle on a five-year deal back in 2016.
Having played a key role in the Magpies’ promotion-winning campaign in the 2016-17 season, he was used regularly by Benitez in the Premier League last season, although his performances in the top-flight weren’t up to the mark.
However, the 24-year-old former England U21 international has really proven his worth at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield in the current campaign and has emerged as one of the manager’s trusted lieutenants.
Hayden has not only cemented his place in the starting eleven at St.James’ Park but has earned rave reviews for his energetic displays as well, contributing with a goal and 4 assists from 24 appearances in the Premier League.
To put things into perspective, Norwich City would do their chances of thriving in the Premier League a world of good if they manage to win the race to sign Isaac Hayden in the summer. The Englishman would have plenty of suitors for his signature in the summer following a successful season and the Canaries would need to work extremely hard to strike a deal for him.
If Norwich are really serious about building a formidable Premier League quality squad, Hayden is exactly the sort of player they need to look at.
The 24-year-old has proven what a wonderful asset he can be with his dogged work-rate and tough-tackling nature in central midfield. Hayden is not only about strength and stamina but he also has the intelligence and the presence of mind to read the transitions in the game quicker than his counterparts.
Quick across the ground and strong in the air, Hayden covers every blade of grass on the pitch and has the range of passing to dictate the play and set his team on the front foot. To add to that, he is more than capable of chipping in with valuable goals and assists from central midfield, something that can be crucial to any team’s success in the Premier League.
Norwich currently have the likes of Mario Vrancic and Kenny McLean as options for that holding midfield role in Daniel Farke’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, while Tom Trybull is also a good enough player for that purpose.
However, they need to understand that veteran Alexander Tettey is not the same solid presence as he was in his younger days and someone like Hayden would be a massive upgrade on the Norwegian, while also increasing competition for places and adding to squad depth.
