Norwich City Opinion: Why the Canaries should snap up Marvin Bakalorz?

According to a report from Norwich Evening News, Norwich City are interested in Hannover 96 midfielder Marvin Bakalorz.

The defensive midfielder, 29, has been at Hannover since 2016, but has never been capped by Germany. Hannover were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2018/19. Marvin Bakalorz is out of contract at the club next month despite the German outfit’s relegation, he is open to stay put at the club.

As things stand, however, the midfielder will be available on a free transfer to Norwich City or Hamburg, next month, the report adds. The Canaries will be playing Premier League football next season after winning the Championship title earlier this year, which could tempt Bakalorz to make the move to Carrow Road.

Marvin Bakalorz

Daniel Farke has already signed a couple of players this summer as he aims to build a team to cope with a new challenge in the Premier League.

His topmost priority has to be signing a striker that can compete with Teemu Pukki, who was a revelation in the Championship and one of the crucial figures behind the club’s promotion. In addition, the German tactician must also look out for a midfielder.

Alexander Tettey had an injury-hit campaign and at 33 is slowing entering the twilight of his career.

Mario Vrancic supplied goals and assists from midfield and so did Moritz Leitner, but it was the surprise partnership of Kenny McLean and Tom Trybull in the second half of the campaign that became so vital for the club’s success.

It remains to be seen whether Farke goes with the McLean-Trybull midfield combination at the start of the campaign. Nevertheless, he needs to add depth to his midfield and Marvin Bakalorz would be ideal.

Bakalorz has spent his entire career in Germany so far, so a move to the Premier League at his peak could be tempting. Standing at 5ft 11in, the German is a really solid defensive midfielder, who is aerially strong and is a good reader of the game.

He is likely to settle down in the Premier League quickly and his physicality coupled with his composure on the ball and tackling skills will make him an ideal fit at the Carrow Road.

The 29-year-old’s style of play is exactly what will help the likes of Vrancic, Stiepermann, Buendia and even Hernandez to express themselves with no defensive concern.

Verdict

On a free transfer, Bakalorz would represent a coup for the Canaries, whose primary aim will be survival upon their return to the top-flight.
