Norwich City Opinion: Canaries should look at Dominik Reimann as one for the future

According to Norwich Evening News, Norwich City have been credited with an interest in German shot-stopper Dominik Reimann, who currently plies his trade in 2.Bundesliga with Holstein Kiel.

Norwich are seemingly in the market for a new No.2 between the sticks to challenge Dutchman Tim Krul for a spot in the eleven and the Canaries links with Reimann probably comes from Daniel Farke’s familiarity with the 21-year-old shot-stopper, who was a part of Borussia Dortmund’s reserves from 2014-16.

Reimann featured prominently for Borussia Dortmund at U-17 and U-19 levels before going on to make 35 appearances for the ‘B’ team. The goalkeeper was promoted to Dortmund’s first-team at the start of the 2017-18 campaign, although he never made a senior competitive appearance for the German heavyweights.

The 21-year-old joined second-tier outfit Holstein Kiel back in May last summer but he had to wait till March 2019 to make his debut for the club, featuring in a 5-1 win against Erzgebirge Aue.

Reimann made a total of 7 appearances for Holstein Kiel over the course of the previous campaign and largely played second fiddle to No.1 Kenneth Kronholm, although the departure of the latter to Chicago Fire this summer is likely to open the door for him to take over the reins as the first-choice should he choose to remain in Germany.

However, as the report suggests, Norwich gaffer Farke is eyeing up a reunion with his former Dortmund youth prospect and the 21-year-old might as well be set for a move to the Premier League this summer. Reimann is yet to rise to prominence in German football, although his feat of representing his nation at the youth level certainly adds a bit more value to his CV.

Reimann has featured for Germany at U-18, U-19 and U-20 levels, representing his nation at the 2016 UEFA European U-19 Championship and 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, meaning that he is one of the brightest emerging goalkeeping prospects in his homeland. Lack of first-team opportunities haven’t allowed him to kick start his career but the prospect of reuniting with Farke in the Premier League is likely to appeal to the player.

To put things into perspective, Dominik Reimann looks like a real talent but one would hardly expect him to challenge an established shot-stopper like Tim Krul for the No.1 role at Carrow Raod in the Premier League next season.

The Dutchman recently signed a new deal with the Canaries and played a key role in their promotion-winning campaign in the Championship, meaning that the 30-year-old is expected to be a part of the manager’s plans moving forward. Also, back-up goalkeeper and former Celtic star Michael McGovern is likely to stay at Carrow Road next term as the designated understudy to Krul.

However, given that Farke knows Reimann well from his earlier days at Dortmund, Norwich should look at the 21-year-old as someone who could possibly add a bit more competition to the U-23 side.

It is true that the Canaries need to look at more experienced and proven players in the market in a bid to add depth and quality to their ranks ahead of the Premier League season but the acquisition of the promising youngster for a thrifty fee won’t do them much harm. To sum it up, they should look at the 6ft. 1 inch Reimann as one for the future.
