Norwich City Opinion: Why Marco Burki will be a smart fit for the Canaries?
According to a report from Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws, Norwich City are one of the five clubs interested in signing Zulte Waregem defender Marco Burki. (h/t Nottingham Post)
Marco Burki, 25, has attracted a lot of attention due to his solid performances in Belgium this year. He made 24 appearances for Zulte Waregem in all competitions.
Norwich City will play in the Premier League next season after winning the Championship title under Daniel Farke. And deservedly so; the Canaries were excellent throughout the entirety of the 2018/19 season and have earned their place back with the big boys.
Farke has built an exciting squad at the Carrow Road and adopted an aggressive, pressing brand of football that became too hot to handle in the Championship. The attacking players enjoyed a remarkable season at Norwich and were consistently classy throughout.
In Teemu Pukki, Onel Hernandez, Emi Buendia and Marco Stiepermann, the Canaries arguably had the best attacking unit. Even though they won majority of the games due to their attacking play, one cannot forget how Farke first built a stable defensive base.
A large reason for the Norfolk club’s promotion is down to their impressive defensive unit made of Jamal Lewis, Ben Godfrey, Christoph Zimmermann and Max Aarons.
Following promotion, Farke also has done a good job by handing Timm Klose a new three-year deal, even though the German defender did not play as big a part as expected.
That clearly tells the Norwich boss is keen on first sorting out his defence before moving onto addressing other areas. And that, indeed, is the right way to plan for a big Premier League season.
That said, signing Marco Burki will also be a step in the right direction for the 2018/19 Championship winners.
Burki has been a standout performer for Waregem this season and the centre-half, who can also play at left-back, will be an inspired addition for Norwich.
The defender has decent pace, and he can carry the ball out from the back. The uncapped Swiss showcases an impressive work rate and his versatility could come handy for Farke’s side.

The 25-year-old is highly rated in Belgium and he’ll not only add quality to Norwich’s defensive ranks, but also improve the squad depth. Burki will be a solid option to compete with the likes of Godfrey, Zimmermann and Klose next season.
Verdict
The report claims Zulte Waregem want €800,000 for Burki and for that price, Norwich could bag a coup by signing the Swiss defender this summer.
