Norwich City Opinion: Why the Canaries should go for Josip Drmic?
According to the German publication SportBild, newly-promoted Premier League outfit Norwich City are eyeing a move for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Josip Drmic. (h/t Fohlen)
The Switzerland international, 26, scored twice in five Bundesliga appearances for Monchengladbach this season. He had an injury-hit campaign which allowed him only a handful of appearances in the Bundesliga. However, Drmic will become a free agent next month upon the expiry of his contract at Borussia Park.
Norwich City are planning to take advantage of Drmic’s availability on a free transfer next month, as Daniel Farke bids to strengthen his squad ahead of the Premier League campaign.
The Canaries have already confirmed the signing of winger Patrick Roberts on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The early signing of Roberts indicates Farke wants to wrap up his transfer business as early as possible so that the players can have a proper pre-season.
Despite having one of the best attacks in the Championship, Farke must not rest on his laurels. Teemu Pukki was a revelation for the Canaries in the second tier of English football last season, scoring 29 goals in the Championship and 30 in all competitions, as well as picking up 10 assists. The Finn’s 29 goals were enough to see him win the Championship’s Golden Boot and of course, the biggest prize of achieving top-flight promotion.
However, it remains to be seen whether Pukki can make the step up to the Premier League after ripping apart defences at will in the Championship. He has struggled at a top level before, with Schalke and at Celtic, and that should put some doubts into Farke’s mind. Thus, bringing in a new striker to compete with Pukki has to be Farke’s priority and he must not hesitate to take a gamble on Josip Drmic.
Drmic has failed to establish himself as a regular starter at Monchengladbach since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. He endured back and muscle problems last season that saw him enjoy only limited game time in the Bundesliga. But the Swiss forward will be keen to leave behind his injury problems and revive his career away from Monchengladbach.

The 26-year-old hasn’t played in the Premier League and would therefore represent something of a risk for the Canaries. But Norwich doesn’t seem like a club that will go out there and pay over the odds for a player, so Drmic on a free transfer would be ideal. He also has solid international experience and has operated at Bundesliga level for several years now.
Verdict
Clearly, Drmic ticks a lot of boxes despite having no prior experience in the Premier League. The Swiss is a good poacher, would be an ideal option from the bench and should compete with Pukki for a place in the starting XI. And on a free transfer, he’ll represent a shrewd signing for Farke’s Norwich.
