Three things that went wrong for Manchester United against Brighton

If people thought Manchester United‘s summer transfer business was underwhelming, they were clearly unaware of what was coming up.

The mighty Red Devils crumbled embarrassingly against Brighton & Hove Albion at Amex Stadium on Sunday. The fans and Jose Mourinho all looked like they would much rather be somewhere else throughout the game. And as far as the players are concerned, well, they certainly looked like they were in a different place.

There was not a single aspect that worked in United’s favour. A disconnect of sorts was quite evident between all the different units on the field, which lead to Brighton’s first goal. After a nervy 90 minutes, Brighton walked away with all of 3 points, while United were left to rue the situation.

But what exactly went wrong for the club? Let’s take a look.

Lack of communication

David De Gea cut a frustrated a figure between the sticks. There seemed to be a serious miscommunication between him and the defenders, right as Brighton were hovering about the net to take their first corner. As a result, the lack of communication reared its ugly head and the Seagulls gleefully exploited the mess.

From there on, the Red Devils fell apart like a house of cards. Nobody seemed to know what was happening on the field and they just looked like they were playing merely to get through the 90 minutes. There was no barking of instructions or any sort of cohesion really. The defence, the attack and the midfield were all in shambles.

No passion or ambition

When one thinks about United’s teams from the past and compares them to the current crop of players, the difference is as stark as chalk and cheese. The Manchester-based outfit were famous for playing with passion and determination throughout the game. In fact, they could never be written off and had earned the tag of being the comeback kings. But now?

Not even a single player showed remorse or passion throughout the game last night. If anything, they just looked tired and wanted to get off the pitch as soon as possible. Good luck winning the trophy with that!

Eric Bailly, Anthony Martial and a few others need to leave

Whether or not Mourinho should leave the club is an entirely different topic. But as of now, United must seriously chop down their squad. There’s ample deadwood that must be gotten rid of and it should be done at the earliest. Bailly was an absolute joke and so was Martial. The Brighton players found it extremely easy to snatch away balls and glide past United’s players and on most occasions, they did nothing to prevent that.

Even Fred had a few rocky moments and if things continue this way, the future looks hopeless for United.
