Best ever Liverpool XI of the Premier League era
When someone talks about Liverpool in the Premier League, there is a lot of heartbreak involved. The club have endured a lot since the start of the league back in 1992. They had to watch their eternal rivals Manchester United enjoy success while they struggled to match those heights.
Liverpool came close on a few occasions but it was always the case of ‘next year will be ours’. They came agonisingly close in 2019 as they finished 2nd only by a point. The next year was truly theirs as they won their first-ever Premier League title in spectacular fashion and circumstances.
There have been a lot of iconic Liverpool players to have graced the league and choosing 11 from so many was definitely a huge ask. Obviously, a few notable names had to be excluded for various reasons. Below we take a look at the best Liverpool XI of the Premier League era.
Best Liverpool XI
Formation : 4-3-3
Goalkeeper – Alisson Becker
Alisson might have only been at the club for just about two seasons but he solved one of Liverpool’s long-standing issues. Until the arrival of the Brazilian, Liverpool lacked a world-class goalkeeper who could command the box and show equal ability in goal. Alisson’s arrival changed all that.
Defence – Andy Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk, Sami Hyypia, Trent Alexander-Arnold
The Premier League has rarely seen a full-back duo like Robertson and Alexander-Arnold. Exceptionally good at attacking as well as defending. The way these two have become such a vital part of Liverpool cannot be underestimated. Season after season, they have produced stunning numbers in front of goal, while not compromising on their primary defensive duties either.
Sami Hyypia was a huge part of Liverpool’s defence during the 2000s, forming a formidable partnership with Jamie Carragher. The Fin is joined by Van Dijk. You can talk about how one player changed a club’s fortune single-handedly. The towering centre-back is exactly that. Ever since he put on their shirt, he has transformed the club from ‘also rans’ to champions.
Midfield – Xabi Alonso, Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard
Xabi Alonso at his best was one of the most aesthetically pleasing players to watch. He was capable of sitting deep and offering protection to the back four while playing some delightful passes. Joining him is Jordan Henderson. Much maligned during his initial years, it almost feels like the former Sunderland man has come full circle to become the first Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League.
There would be no Liverpool XI of any kind without their icon Steven Gerrard. If someone wore his heart on his sleeve for the club, it was Gerrard. A midfielder extraordinaire and a talismanic captain who gave it all for the club.
Attack – Sadio Mane, Luis Suarez, Mohamed Salah
It’s a testament to Mane and Salah’s quality and contribution to Liverpool that they feature in this line-up. Mane has been the most important player for the team ever since he joined despite what others may say. Salah, on the other hand, has been criminally underrated by everyone despite boasting of one of the best goalscoring records for the club.

It was a hard pick between Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres but we decided to go ahead with the former. Suarez was the perfect replacement for Torres in so many ways. He was one of the league’s deadliest frontmen and almost dragged Liverpool to a title during his time at the club.
