In October 2007, Vucevic moved to Simi Valley, California, to play his senior year of high school at Stoneridge Prep. He knew little English but spoke French, which many of his teammates did as well. He was team captain under coach Babacar Sy, a friend of his father’s, and led the team in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and 12 rebounds per game. Vucevic was a three-year starter for the University of Southern California Trojans.
Vucevic sat out the first eight games of the season while the NCAA Clearinghouse confirmed his amateur status. In 23 games with three starts, he averaged 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds. Vucevic made his USC debut against Pepperdine on December 15, 2008, and had two points, two blocks, and two rebounds in six minutes. He made his first start of the season on January 24, 2009, against Washington State, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds in the Trojans’ 46-44 victory. Vucevic was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 16th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft on June 23, 2011. Vucevic played for Montenegrin club Budunost Podgorica during the 2011 NBA lockout.
Following the end of the lockout, Vucevic returned to the United States and signed a rookie scale contract with the 76ers on December 9, 2011.
