In October 2007, Vucevic moved to Simi Valley, California, to play his senior year of high school at Stoneridge Prep. He knew little English but spoke French, which many of his teammates did as well. He was team captain under coach Babacar Sy, a friend of his father’s, and led the team in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and 12 rebounds per game. Vucevic was a three-year starter for the University of Southern California Trojans.

Vucevic sat out the first eight games of the season while the NCAA Clearinghouse confirmed his amateur status. In 23 games with three starts, he averaged 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds. Vucevic made his USC debut against Pepperdine on December 15, 2008, and had two points, two blocks, and two rebounds in six minutes. He made his first start of the season on January 24, 2009, against Washington State, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds in the Trojans’ 46-44 victory. During his sophomore season, Vucevic began to shine. On November 17, 2009, he scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first game of the season against UC Riverside, both totals higher than in any of his freshman games. On December 3, 2009, Vucevic had 18 points and 14 rebounds at Texas.

Vucevic averaged 17.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game as a junior. Fox Sports named him to the fourth team All-America and the first team All-Pac-10. Vucevic announced in March 2011 that he would forego his senior year to enter the NBA draft.

The Orlando Magic traded Vucevic and Al-Farouq Aminu to the Chicago Bulls on March 25, 2021, in exchange for Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter, and two future first-round picks. Nikola made his Bulls debut on March 27 in a 120-104 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, scoring a game-high 21 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and dishing out four assists in 32 minutes.

On October 24, 2022, Vucevic scored 18 points, grabbed 23 rebounds, and assisted five times in a 120-102 victory over the reigning Eastern Conference champions Boston Celtics.
