Aaron Rodgers is set to sign a short-term deal with Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers’ future at Green Bay has been thrown into question for quite a while now. However, it appears that Rodgers’ representation and the NFC North division side are close to negotiating a short-term deal. The agreement will be fruitful for both parties with Rodgers in line to become the highest-paid player in the league on a per-year basis.

This is according to reports from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. It is believed that the Packers and Rodgers are working on a deal behind the scenes. Rodgers, 38, is yet to decide on his future with the team as rumours of a potential retirement for the QB have also done the rounds on social media.

Prior to the start of last season, there was plenty of uncertainty around Rodgers’ future in the NFL. The Super Bowl XLV champion had refused to attend the team’s training sessions but eventually returned after a rather discontent offseason.

Rodgers had revealed that his mending with the Packers board began shortly after he returned to the team last July. During a meeting with general manager Brian Gutekunst early in training camp, Rodgers outlined his desire to play for the franchise in 2021. He agreed to return to training after multiple Zoom meetings, phone calls and several trips made by team personnel.

Aaron Rodgers and Packers on the verge of extending partnership?

On Monday, Rapoport spoke on the situation about the Packers and Rodgers. He was on NFL Total Access and said, “Nothing is done, but they are having discussions. They are having negotiations to have a deal, hopefully for them, ready to go if and when Aaron Rodgers firmly and finally decides that he wants to return.”

The contract obviously hinges on whether Rodgers agrees to the new deal with the Packers. It is believed that the franchise is offering Rodgers a lucrative offer to sweeten the deal.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst also outlined that the franchise needs to clear the air around Rodgers. The 48-year-old explained that Rodgers would be imperative to the team and the veteran QB’s decision is likely to influence the Packers’ offseason plans preparations.

Meanwhile, Rodgers has insisted that he does not want to drag out questions on his future at Green Bay. Rumours of a trade or retirement have also been circling around as Rodgers admitted that there was a “lot to think about” on his future decision. The four-time MVP is likely to speak out on his decision soon enough.
