Newcastle United Opinion: Magpies should look at Eddie Salcedo as a good long-term investment

According to claims from Italian outlet Fcinternews.it, Eddie Salcedo has attracted interest from Premier League club Newcastle United ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Fcinternews understands that the Magpies have contacted the 17-year-old’s agent to discuss a potential move to St.James’ Park this summer, although talks between both the parties are yet to reach an advanced stage.

The same source has confirmed that Inter Milan are keen to turn Salcedo’s loan deal into a permanent move, with reports claiming that the Nerrazuri are prepared to splash €8 million to bring the promising 17-year-old to the San Siro permanently.

Newcastle, however, are not the only club to have expressed an interest in signing Eddie Salcedo, with Fcinternews claiming that Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco had also contacted the player’s agent to inquire about his availability.

If reports are to be believed and Inter do, indeed, sign him up permanently, Salcedo’s development is going to be assessed by new manager Antonio Conte, who would then make a decision whether to keep him at the club or send him out on loan to gain more experience. (h/tFcinternews.it)

Born in Genova, Italy, to parents of Colombian origin, Eddie Salcedo rose through the youth ranks at his boyhood club Genoa before making his senior first-team debut in the Serie A as a 15-year-old back in August 2015, coming on as a substitute in a 0-0 draw against Sassuolo. Salcedo was loaned out to Inter Milan last summer and it looks as if the youngster has impressed the scouts and the hierarchy with his performances at the reserve level.

Salcedo has netted 12 goals in 25 appearances for Inter Milan’s U-19 side in the Campionato Primavera 2018-19 till now and has attracted interest from other European clubs, owing to his prolific nature in front of goal. The 17-year-old has earned rave reviews for his rapid development, although he still has a long time to go in his career and one would hardly expect him to play in the Premier League next season even if a move does materialize.

To put things into perspective, Eddie Salcedo looks like a real talent at this stage of his career and his links with clubs like Inter Milan and Monaco are clear evidence of the fact that he is seen as a player with a mountain of potential. Salcedo is yet to establish himself at the senior level but it won’t be long before he carves out a reputation for himself provided he continues his development down the right path.

The 17-year-old has represented Italy at the U-19 level internationally, scoring 3 goals in 8 appearances. Standing at 5ft. 10 inches, Salcedo is an out-and-out centre-forward but he has got the versatility of a modern-day striker, with his right-footed nature and a good burst of pace making him a decent fit for a role out wide on the left.

Newcastle have plenty of issues to sort out heading into the transfer window, the most important of them being the future of manager Rafael Benitez, who is out of contract in a month’s time. The likes of Isaac Hayden and Mo Diame are also likely to leave the club, while West Brom loanee Salomon Rondon’s future still hangs in the balance. Ayoze Perez has also been linked with moves to Serie A and La Liga (h/t Chronicle Live), meaning that the Magpies are likely to face a fight in a bid to hold on to their prized assets.

Eddie Salcedo is a really talented player and the chance to further his development under Rafael Benitez should appeal to the youngster, although it is still unclear whether Newcastle want to buy him outright or they are looking at a loan move with an obligation to make it permanent.

Nevertheless, the Magpies should look at this move as a shrewd piece of business and a good long-term investment in a bid to add more competition to their youth ranks.
