Sam Lammers will enhance Newcastle United’s attacking statistics

Newcastle United’s season has been riddled with a multitude of injuries right from the off which have seriously deterred with Rafa Benitez’s plan for progress this season. Key players like Kenedy and Paul Dummett were missed at important parts of the season.

While the former is a winger and was relatively easy to replace in the first-team, finding an alternative for Dummett was quite a task. The solution that the genius of Rafa Benitez came up with was to simply move left-winger Matt Ritchie a few steps back into the defensive phase.

These injuries started a flurry of events, leading to the current Newcastle side not having a single day in the entire season where at least one player wasn’t unavailable for selection due to some silly niggle or knock.

Another position where Benitez’s side have trouble this year is up-front. Although the flanks are nearly secured now with the recent acquisition of Paraguayan star Miguel Almiron, the addition of a prolific scorer would take the Magpies to the next level.

Over the course of the season, it has been proven that neither Yoshinori Muto nor Joselu are capable of actually leading the Newcastle line and delivering goals on a consistent basis. Both of them have struggled for form this season and have even received very limited game time.

Their only beacon of hope at the top is West Bromwich Albion loanee Salomon Rondon, who made the switch to St.James’ Park in a deal that also involved Dwight Gayle going on loan in the opposite direction.

The Venezuelan international forward has contributed to this Magpies side quite heavily with his hold-up play and heading abilities. He has scored a respectable 7 times from his 23 league appearances while he has also managed to notch up 4 assists.

These are decent numbers and when the end of the season does arrive and Rondon returns to his parent club and when it becomes quite clear again that Dwight Gayle cannot deliver at the Premier League level, the signing of a new striker must be a priority.

Given their current situation, they needn’t search past Heerenveen’s sensational Dutch forward Sam Lammers, who has been in excellent form this season. Currently, on loan at Heerenveen from PSV, the 21-year-old has scored 13 and assisted 4 from his 22 Eredivisie games this season.

He is pacy and his movement is sharp while his ability to pick a pass and finish from distance will come as motivation as well. His young age will enable Rafa to mould him into the model striker. That’s why a move for this talented Dutchman must be on the cards at St.James’ Park.
