Newcastle United Opinion: Why the Magpies should sign Alfredo Morelos?
According to a report from Spanish news outlet Don Balon, Newcastle United are plotting a £20m swoop for Rangers star striker Alfredo Morelos.
The Colombian, 22, joined Rangers from HJK Helsinki two summers ago and has established himself as one of the best strikers in the Scottish Premiership. He was excellent for the Gers this season, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists in the league.
A move to the Premier League would be ideal for Alfredo Morelos as he has the talent to cut his teeth in arguably the best league in the world. Going by his impressive numbers for Rangers this season, Newcastle United must definitely go all out to sign him.
Newcastle United fans are anxiously waiting to hear whether the club’s proposed takeover will go through. Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan is in negotiations to buy the North East club from Mike Ashley, as reported by the Sun.
If it comes to fruition, Rafael Benitez could have significant funds to spend in the transfer market. But Benitez is out of contract at the club next month, which has left the fans in complete limbo. So, one of the Sheikh’s first jobs will be to tie down Benitez to a new contract, with the Sun claiming the potential new owners are willing to back the manager to improve the squad ahead of the new season.
The quicker the takeover goes through, the better for Benitez and the fans. As far as the summer transfer window is concerned, Newcastle need new signings if they are to challenge for a top-half finish next campaign. And Benitez should prioritise strengthening his attack, which looked toothless and devoid of energy for large parts of the 2018/19 campaign.
Whether Salomon Rondon joins the Toon Army from West Brom permanently remains to be seen, but Benitez must offload Joselu this summer itself. Yoshinori Muto is likely to get another season at St. James’ Park and even if Benitez manages to bring in Rondon, the Magpies would still lack firepower up front.

He has shown over the last two years in the Scottish Premiership that he is a consistent goalscorer, with pace to burn while being bold in taking on opposition defenders. The Colombian is a predator inside the box and despite his discipline problems will provide goals consistently for Newcastle.

Benitez is a world-class manager and he might be the one to unlock Morelos’ true potential. If he can help the Colombian forward channel his aggression better and provide full support, the Magpies would have a jewel in their hands in Morelos.
