Newcastle United Opinion: Tammy Abraham would be an excellent long-term investment for the Magpies

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham in the summer and the Magpies would be willing to make an offer for the 21-year-old should the Blues put him up for sale.

Abraham has caught the eye with his stellar run of form in the Championship on loan at Aston Villa this season, scoring 25 goals from 37 appearances to propel the Lions to a playoff spot.

The Birmingham Mail reports that it would require any club to dish out a fee close to £30 million if they are to have a chance of taking the promising 21-year-old away from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, though, are under pressure not to sell any of their existing players due to the transfer ban as they would not be allowed to register any new players for two transfer windows.

This is not the first time that Abraham has enjoyed a fruitful loan spell as a part of Chelsea’s loan army, with the 21-year-old scoring 5 goals in the Premier League last season on his loan spell at Swansea City which ultimately ended in relegation. Prior to that, the once-capped English international hit 23 goals in the Championship for Bristol City in the 2016-17 season.

Abraham is regarded as one of the best emerging centre-forwards in English football and has been widely tipped to make a huge impression in the Premier League in the years to come. At 21, he has clearly outgrown the Championship and it is now time for him to continue his development at the highest level.

To put things into perspective, Newcastle would strike gold with the signing of Tammy Abraham in the summer and this might well be the move that brings plenty of joy to the fans at Tyneside. Having signed Miguel Almiron for a club-record fee back in the January window, the Magpies should continue to spend big and enrich their squad with some top-quality players. And Abraham certainly fits the bill.

The likes of Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez have played a key role for Rafael Benitez’s side in the Premier League this season. Perez has struck a career-best 12 goals in the Premier League, while West Brom loanee Rondon has contributed with 10 goals and 7 assists. It would be fair to say that their contribution has been instrumental in steering the Magpies to safety in the top-flight, following a disastrous start to the campaign which saw Newcastle go through a winless streak of more than 10 games at the start of the season.

However, owner Mike Ashley is reluctant to fund a permanent move for Rondon, despite the Venezuelan establishing himself as the club’s first-choice striker and a firm fan favourite at St.James’ Park. Rondon is going to be 30 next season and he doesn’t exactly fit the profile of players that Newcastle usually sign in the transfer market, with Mike Ashley seemingly more eager to bring in younger players with good resale value in the market.

Ayoze Perez has also been linked with an exit in the summer, with The Sun claiming that Serie A giants Inter Milan and Napoli, as well as Arsenal, are weighing up deals for the 25-year-old. If both Perez and Rondon, or either of them, leave the club in the summer, Benitez is going to have a tough job on his hands to bring in a like-for-like replacement.

Tammy Abraham perfectly fits the profile of players Ashley likes to invest in and the Englishman would definitely be an excellent long-term investment for the Magpies. A tall, strong and athletic centre-forward with an incredible eye for goal with both feet and head, Abraham could be the perfect man to lead the line at Tyneside next season.

Still only 21, Abraham has plenty of time to make improvements to his game and he is only going to get better with time. Striking a deal for him would be a massive coup for the Magpies, though it remains to be seen whether the Blues want him to stay at Stamford Bridge next season to compete for a first-team place.
