Why Newcastle United signing Facundo Pellistri would be a good move

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United will battle with Manchester City in the race to sign Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri from Penarol in the summer.

The 18-year-old Pellistri spent time at the academies of La Picada and River Plate Montevideo before signing for Penarol. The winger made his first-team debut in September last year and has since gone on to earn rave reviews for his performances.

Till date, Pellistri has made 25 senior appearances for the Uruguayan club, bagging a solitary goal and assisting three more.

Newcastle need attacking reinforcements

As things stand, the Tyneside outfit are 13th in the Premier League table, having collected just 35 points from 29 matches so far. The lack of goals has been a huge issue for Newcastle this term. The Magpies have netted just 25 goals in the league this season. That is the joint-lowest tally in the league, along with Norwich City.

The centre-forwards in the squad – Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto, have contributed with just the one goal combined. Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have shown glimpses of threat from the flanks, but have managed only two goals apiece. Whereas Christian Atsu has failed to find the back of the net even once.

Hence, it goes without saying that Newcastle are in need of attacking reinforcements heading into the summer window. And, Pellistri, to that end, would be a viable option. The 18-year-old has shown immense potential in a short time at the senior level with Penarol. He made three league appearances prior to the current season getting suspended in Uruguay and managed an assist.

The fact that Manchester City are interested and have already held preliminary talks to secure his signing should be an indicator of how highly he is rated. Even Real Madrid have their eyes on the winger, as per the report.

Signing him would provide Newcastle with added threat from the flanks, while increasing the depth within the squad.

Verdict

Newcastle have lacked serious threat from the wide areas this season. Furthermore, the manager doesn’t have a lot of quality options for the wide areas. Hence, signing Pellistri would be a good move for the club.

The 18-year-old is held in very high regard and has demonstrated immense potential in a short time at the senior level. Given time, the winger would only get better and grow into a key man for the Magpies with experience.
