Newcastle United Opinion: Why the Magpies should sign Marc Cucurella?

According to a report from The Chronicle, Barcelona youngster Marc Cucurella is on the radar of Newcastle United.

The 20-year-old spent the whole of the season on loan at Eibar, featuring in 31 La Liga games. Eibar have a €2 million option on him but the report claims that Barcelona will then consider signing the left-back back for €4m this summer before evaluating their next move regarding the youngster.

Newcastle are set to face competition from Sevilla and Real Betis for Marc Cucurella, who made 26 starts and five substitute appearances in La Liga for Eibar this season, scoring one goal and proving two assists in the process.

The Magpies board know they must get Rafael Benitez’s situation sorted out first before focusing on the summer dealings. Benitez wants at least six new faces over the summer if he commits his future at St. James’ Park. Interest in Cucurella suggests the Newcastle boss wants one of his signings at left-back.

The Toon signed Antonio Barreca on half-season loan from AS Monaco in January. But the 24-year-old endured a disastrous spell at Tyneside, managing just five minutes of Premier League football. It doesn’t make sense for Benitez’s side to make the move permanent as the Italian failed to make a mark in England.

Meanwhile, Kenedy has returned to Chelsea after a disappointing season-long loan at St. James’ Park. The Brazilian’s underwhelming performances have seen the Magpies reject their option to make transfer permanent, which means Benitez is now left with only Paul Dummett as the recognised left-back.

Marc Cucurella

Thus, it makes complete sense for the Magpies to sign a new left-back and Benitez should make a move for Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard looks a promising prospect having made a telling impact with Eibar on loan from Barcelona in the 2018/19. He possesses searing pace and agility, with his ability to deliver crosses from the left will be a treat for the Newcastle forwards.

The 20-year-old can play further up the pitch and also in midfield, offering Benitez lots of options as a result of his versatility. Cucurella is young and talented with bags of potential—a player that perfectly fits the profile at St. James’ Park.

Verdict

If Newcastle can prise Cucurella away from Barcelona ahead of the likes of Sevilla and Real Betis, then Benitez’s Magpies would bag a massive coup. In fact, the young Spaniard could be one of Tyneside-based club’s inspired signings for years.
