Newcastle United Opinion: Why the Magpies should go for Andreas Samaris

According to January’s report fromthe Chronicle Live, Newcastle United were interested in signing Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris.

The Greek, 29, is yet to put pen to paper on a fresh deal with Benfica and as things stand, he’ll be a free agent in the summer. He has earned himself a new lease of life since the sacking of Rui Vitoria, re-establishing himself in the Benfica team.

Despite his preference being to stay with the Portuguese giants, Newcastle should rekindle their interest and make a move for Andreas Samaris in the summer.

Rafael Benitez, who is yet to commit to a new deal at Newcastle, will have his own ideas on how to go about in the summer transfer window. He has successfully kept the Magpies in the Premier League for the second year in a row and deserves to get backed heavily in the transfer market.

Newcastle United are bound to look out for midfield reinforcements in the summer. Jonjo Shelvey is a target for West Ham, while Mohamed Diame is out of contract at the end of the season. Isaac Hayden has admitted that he is likely to leave Tyneside in the summer to move closer to his one-year-old daughter, who lives down south.

Sean Longstaff has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at St. James’ Park and Ki-Sung Yueng has done reasonably well. But the Magpies need depth in the squad if they are to go one step ahead in the 2019/20 campaign.

Keeping everything in mind, Newcastle must swoop in for Andreas Samaris, who could be a bargain remedy for Benitez as far as his options in midfield are concerned. The Greece international is a holding midfielder by trade but he can also play as a central midfielder.

Noted for his tenacity and high levels of stamina, the 29-year-old does a good job in moving the ball around the pitch. He is not conservative with his passing at any case but knows when to keep things tidy and when to increase the tempo of play.

Samaris is quick and possesses the ability to pick the right pass in the final third, although he’s not a player that’ll consistently supply with assists and goals. Furthermore, the former Olympiakos man is more than capable of holding things together and cutting out attacks with his wonderful understanding of the game and interception skills.

Verdict

Newcastle United need at least a couple of midfielders in the summer; so on a free transfer Samaris would represent a bargain buy.
