Marbury wasselected by the Milwaukee Bucks during the 1996 NBA Draft and traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his rookie season, he was named to the All-Rookie Team. In 1999, and was traded to the New Jersey Nets.
However, after an inconsistent time with the franchise, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns after failing to make the playoffs with the Nets. Marbury featured in the All-Star Team once again and reached the playoffs. Soon after, he was traded across to the New York Knicks.
There was a lot of controversy when Isiah Thomas was named coach, as Marbury was reportedly blackmailing him after being benched for most of the season. With this frustration, he moved to the Boston Celtics for a year.
In 2010, he signed for the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association. A year later, he transferred to the Foshan Dralions and then the Beijing Ducks. He won the CBA Championship three times with the Ducks. He officially announced his retirement in 2018.
In 2019, he became the new head coach of the Beijing Royal Fighters. Marbury wants to start a 3-on-3 professional basketball league in China during a 10-week season with about eight teams.
