Scores of black Hebrew Israelites showed up to the Barclays Center to support Kyrie Irving’s return to action for the Brooklyn Nets.

The Brooklyn Nets defeated the Memphis Grizzlies at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday night. It was an important and hard-earned win for the home side who overturned a first-half deficit to win 127-115 against the Memphis Grizzlies, but most of the headlines were taken by the return of Kyrie Irving – as the suspended Nets star made his return back to the court.

Kyrie Irving was at the centre of controversy all this month after he posted a promotional tweet for the 2018 film “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” – a film that portrays age-old anti-Semitic tropes and sentiments. Despite being prompted by the media to apologize or address his beliefs, Irving chose not to deny his sentiments which prompted the Nets to suspend the star.

Because of his tweet and his inability to strongly deny any anti-Semitic beliefs, Irving was suspended by the Nets for five games without pay. The Nets star was also handed a set of terms that he has to follow if he wants to make his return to action, upon the fulfilment of which – Irving returned to the court and put up a tally of 14 points, 5 rebounds and a block and steal each.

However, it was the sea of support for him outside the Barclays Center ahead of the game that made the most news about his return to action.

Why did the sea of support for Kyrie Irving make the news?

The crowd that showed up to support Kyrie Irving’s return were revealed to be black Hebrew Israelites – a group whose sentiments mirror Irving’s according to his tweet.

It was revealed that the sea of support – who sang and chanted ahead of Kyrie Irving’s return to the basketball court – were actually black Hebrew Israelites. The black Hebrew Israelites are a group who believe in the anti-Semitic sentiments portrayed by the film that Irving promoted.

Regardless, the Brooklyn Nets would be happy having Kyrie back and marked the occasion with what was their second win on the bounce as they try and turn their season around.
