Before a swap agreement was reached, Brittney Griner was imprisoned in Russia for ten months. President Joe Biden received a special thank-you from Stephen Curry for sending her home.

Curry’s gratitude was more direct, adding, “Great chance for us in the basketball community to thank President Biden and his team for all their hard work and care in bringing home Brittney Griner, who is a vital part of our basketball family.”

Stephen Curry’s previous visits to the White House

Curry had previously discussed the possibility of having visited the White House after the Warriors managed to win the NBA Championship in 2017, when Trump was president. Curry had stated that if the team were invited and had the option to vote on whether to go, he would refuse to go.

The sportsman has expressed his sentiments for Trump in the open. Curry referred to Trump as a “ass” in February of that year. Trump tweeted that the offer was no longer on the table even though it’s still uncertain whether the White House had ever given one to the Warriors (players and coaches had previously discussed the prospect of attending, but always with the qualifier “if we’re invited”).

Many athletes, like basketball great Michael Jordan, have chosen not to participate in the customary visit over the years for a variety of reasons. Some see it as a political strategy, such as Matt Birk of the Baltimore Ravens. In 2013, he chose not to go since he did not agree with Obama’s backing of Planned Parenthood.
