Russell Westbrook has been in the spotlight for a majority of the off-season. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar had a disappointing season last year, and especially when the Lakers raked in Patrick Beverley – a competitor for his position as well as a long-term rival – it was rumoured that the Lakers were ready to move him on as his services were not needed anymore.

However, due to a lack of suitors because of his rapidly declining form, the NBA veteran is now set to stay at the Lakers until the end of the upcoming season. As a result, Westbrook has been in the gym in the preseason – amidst reports that he will only be used as a bench player – and is reportedly motivated to shut his critics down for good with a comeback season for the ages.

So when Russ came up with an Instagram story while being in attendance at Kendrick Lamar’s concert, many fans interpreted it as a subliminal message for his detractors.

As Westbrook’s wife Nina posted a story of Russ singing along to the Compton rapper’s 2022 hit “Count Me Out” accompanied with the caption “I love when you count me out”, fans saw it as a veiled message.

What did the fans have to say about Russell Westbrook’s subliminal message?

It would be fair to say that the fans did not respond kindly to the message either.

While one fan commented: “You’re coming off the bench bro”, another said: “maybe @russwest44 should actually spend some time practicing his free throws.”

However, not all fans were so brutal as some came up with replies such as “OH YEAAAA RUSS”, “This is Russell’s theme song for this Season lol”, and “He could relate to that song. I love when they count me out.”

It will be exciting to see Russ’ role for the Lakers this season, and how he performs it.
