18 NBA players have been charged in a healthcare fraud that has shocked the league

In a shocking revelation made recently, 18 Ex-NBA players have been charged for allegedly defrauding the league with nearly $4 million of health benefit schemes. The authorities have also revealed that the players made false claims of medical expenses.

The NBA has a healthcare scheme in place where the players get reimbursed for their medical and supplemental expenses. It is saddening to know that a plan that has been put in place for the players welfare was taken advantage of by some of the players.

Each one of the 18 players have made false claims ranging from $48,000 to $420,000. The players also generated false medical records and were not even physically present anywhere near the locations given by them. The reports have also been verified by GPS and travel records.

In one instance, a player submitted records of him getting $48,000 worth of dental treatment at a Beverly Hills dental clinic in 2018. When in actuality he was in Taiwan playing basketball at the time and date mentioned by him.

What will happen to the accused players?

The players have made false claims worth a total of $3.9 million and also received $2.5 million as reimbursement from the league. U.S Attorney Audrey Strauss reported that FBI agents across the country have already arrested 15 players and one of their wives.

It is reported that the plan was led by Terence Williams. He first submitted false reports and later recruited other players to defraud the NBA. Tony Allen, Sebastian Telfair, Shannon Brown and Anthony Wroten also amongst others have been charged.
