Naomi Osaka turned pro in September 2013, even before turning 16, and quickly rose through the ranks.

Her first major breakthrough came when she made it to her first WTA Final in 2016, which saw her break into the top 100 and eventually the top 50 in the same year.

She then won her first Grand Slam in 2018 when she defeated veteran Serena Williams in the final of the US Open 6-2, 6-4.

Naomi Osaka: Ranking History

Just a few weeks after turning pro, Osaka was ranked no.406 in the world. However, she was only 16 back then.

She broke into the top 250 for the first time just before the end of the 2014 WTA season. And in the year 2015, she reached the highest ranking of her career back then, at no.144.

A break into the top 100 was achieved after she beat the then no.18 ranked Sara Errani in the Miami Open, after earning an entry as a wildcard. And, in the same year, Osaka reached her first WTA final at the Pan Pacific Open. As a result, Osaka broke into the top 50.

With 2017 being a year to forget, Naomi Osaka made giant strides in the year 2018, winning the US Open, which saw her enter the top 10 of the rankings. She then followed it up with a victory at the Australian Open, as she reached the helm just 5 years after turning pro.

2019 was a quite year after her Australian Open success, and so was 2020 for a large part. But she once again showed her resilience, as she won her second US Open title in 2020, following it up with a victory at the 2021 Australian Open.

She was the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam event, and the first Asian to hold the top rankings in singles.

The first break

Things went a bit haywire from thereon as she lost in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Shortly before the beginning of the French Open, she announced that she won’t be conducting her mandatory media assignments. She didn’t hold her press conference after winning her first match. She was fined $15,000 and threatened with increasing amounts of fines and expulsion.

The following day she would announce her withdrawal from the competition citing mental health issues. Many fellow athletes supported her during her temporary sabbatical from the game. Tennis fans from all around the world, however, had mixed opinions.

Her manager declared that she would be playing the Olympic Games in Tokyo but will skip Wimbledon 2021.

She later returned to action in the Cincinnati Open where she defeated the impressive Coco Gauff in the second round but lost in the next round to Jil Teichman which was an upset.

The second break

Osaka failed to defend her title at the US Open. She lost to eventual runner-up Leylah Fernandez in the third round. She was serving for a match point in the second set but frustration and hence wavering concentration got the better of her.

During the match, Osaka threw her racket and received a code violation for hitting a ball into the stands.

Osaka shocked the tennis world once again when she stated in her post-match press conference that she will be taking another break from the sport. She said she wasn’t getting happiness from her wins.

The four-time Grand Slam winner returned to action in the 2022 Melbourne Summer Set 1 tournament as no. 1 seed and made the semis before withdrawing due to an abdominal injury.

She came back in the Australian Open but she failed to defend her title. She was knocked out in the third round by Amanda Anisimova.

Osaka though made some promising comments about how she was happy despite her loss. She also spoke about how she has is dealing with her mental health issues and that they are improving day by day. The fact that she was beginning to enjoy her game once again, came as a huge relief for her innumerable fans.

She dropped to no. 85 after the debacle and her skipping multiple tournaments didn’t help as well.

Currently, she is ranked 78. Naomi Osaka will feature in the Indian Wells Masters as she takes on Sloane Stephens in the Round of 128.
