2nd seed Jannik Sinner squares off against compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Montpellier Open on Friday.
The talented Italian youngster began the season by reaching the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International 1 with wins against Kyle Edmund and Thanasi Kokkinakis. In Montpellier though, he has made it to the quarterfinals without even laying foot on the court.
After receiving a bye into the round of 16, Sinner was scheduled to play Marton Fucsovics. The Hungarian athlete pulled out of the tournament prior to the encounter. Sinner is one of the strong favorites to win the competition. He would be raring to go after playing his last match on January 22 against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
The 27-year-old came into the tournament with just 1 win and 3 losses in 2023. He has managed to win both his matches in straight sets in the Montpellier Open against two good players.
In the round of 32, Sonego ousted 8th seed Benjamin Bonzi with a compact effort. The match ended 6-3, 6-4 in favor of the Italian star. Sonego followed it up with another fine win against world No. 71 Filip Krajinovic. The match ended 7-5, 6-1. Sonego had an impressive win percentage of 87 on the first serve.
