When the San Francisco Giants began their spring training in Scottsdale this month, it was announced that former outfielder and speechifier Hunter Pence will be re-joining the team in a coaching and mentoring capacity. This news came about a month after it was made public that Pence would be rejoining the Giants.

On Monday night, the three-time World Series winner Sergio Romo made his final appearance for the San Francisco Giants before calling it quits and retiring from baseball. At the age of 40, Romo entered the spring training game that was being played at Oracle Park on Monday night in the seventh inning. There were 30,254 people in attendance. Romo’s final at-bat as a Major League Baseball player was marked by an emotional display, despite the fact that he did not record an out.

An unexpected visit to the mound from Romo’s old teammate, Hunter Pence, resulted in Romo being taken out of the game. When Pence came from the dugout, Romo appeared to be completely taken aback.

In the year 2004, the Houston Astros selected Hunter Pence from the available players in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft. Pence made his debut in the main leagues in the year 2007. He has been selected for the All-Star game four times and contributed to the Giants’ championship teams in both 2012 and 2014 for the World Series.

Pence received his high school education at Arlington High School, located in Arlington, Texas. After spending his freshman through junior year in the outfield, he made the switch to shortstop for his senior year. He spent one year at Texarkana College, where he was a member of the baseball team and played the designated hitter position. After transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), he continued playing baseball with the UT Arlington Mavericks at the outfield position. As a sophomore in 2003, he had a batting average of.347 and was selected to the first team of all-conference outfielders.

Pence made his debut in the major leagues as the center fielder for the Houston Astros in 2007 against the Milwaukee Brewers[8]. During that game, he collected his first hit in the major leagues and scored his first run. Pence hit a grand slam for the first time in the major leagues while playing against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pence was traded to the San Francisco Giants in the nick of time in 2012 by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies were given Nate Schierholtz, Tommy Joseph, and Seth Rosin as compensation for the trade. Pence had a respectable career overall and is held in high esteem by San Francisco Giants supporters from every corner of the globe.

Pence re-signed with the Giants for another season in 2020, this time on a one-year deal worth $3 million. After starting the season with a batting line of.096/.161/.250 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs across 56 plate appearances, Pence was designated for assignment on August 23, 2020, after the organisation acquired Daniel Robertson. This decision was made in response to Pence’s performance.
