Early career
Alvarado, a talented wrestler from Skyview High School in Colorado, managed to secure the title of Colorado Class 4A state high school wrestling champion not once but twice. However, he made an unconventional choice by choosing not to pursue wrestling in college and instead pursuing a career in boxing. Despite this, he managed to achieve great success in the sport in just three years, compiling an impressive record of 36-5.
Alvarado’s opponents included highly skilled fighters such as Chad Aquino and Andre Dirrell, who went on to compete in the 2004 Athens Olympics Aquino and Dirrell were both defeated by Alvarado, who went on to capture the prestigious Ringside National Championship in 2001. His success in boxing serves as a prime example of his exceptional athletic aptitude.
Professional career
Alvarado withdrew from his fight against Paulie Malignaggi due to an elbow injury in 2009. He returned to boxing after serving a 5-month prison sentence and knocked out Lenin Arroyo in the second round. However, he was sent back to jail for parole violations before his scheduled fight on Latin Fury 15. After his release, Alvarado won against Joshua Burns.
He defeated Raymond Narh to win the WBC Continental Americas Light Welterweight Championship, which he later vacated before his fight with Gabriel Martínez on the Pacquiao vs. Mosley undercard. Alvarado won the IBF Latino Light Welterweight Championship against Gabriel Martínez on July 30, 2011, in Denver, Colorado.
On the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Márquez III in 2011, Alvarado faced Breidis Prescott. The first five rounds were won by Prescott, but Alvarado gained momentum and won the middle and final rounds. Alvarado used left and right uppercuts to knock Prescott down in the tenth round before landing a sequence of punches to seal the victory. Alvarado was ahead on the scorecards when the fight was stopped with 1:07 remaining in the contest.
Alvarado beat Herrera in a fight at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarado won the unanimous decision, and afterward, he expressed interest in fighting Juan Manuel Márquez. Alvarado was recognized on “The Gatti List” as one of the top 10 most entertaining fighters.
In October 2012, Alvarado lost his undefeated record to Brandon Ríos, who stopped him in the 7th round with a crushing right at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. They had a rematch in March 2013, which was a close fight until Alvarado changed strategy, becoming harder to hit with fancy footwork. Alvarado won by unanimous decision with scores of 115-113, 115-113, and 114-113 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The promoter suggested that they face other fighters instead of having another rematch. Their first fight was voted 2012 Fight of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
In his hometown of Denver, Colorado, Alvarado lost the WBO Light Welterweight championship to Ruslan Provodnikov on October 19, 2013, after deciding not to enter the ring for the eleventh round. Provodnikov had taken Alvarado down twice in the eighth round and was leading on all three scorecards. Alvarado’s fight against Provodnikov was his first defense of the full title, as he was upgraded from interim title holder before the match.
Alvarado faced Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Márquez in a welterweight bout for the WBO International Welterweight Championship on May 17, 2014, at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Márquez, a four-division champion and #6 ranked Ring Magazine pound-for-pound fighter, won the fight by unanimous decision
On April 12, 2019, he competed in his final professional match against fellow American boxer Arnold Barboza Jr. Alvarado was defeated by third-round KO.
