Manchester City Opinion: Houssem Aouar signing will be huge for City

According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side are said to be extremely keen on signing Lyon’s young French sensation Houssem Aouar in the summer as they look for successors to their ageing midfield stars.

The Frenchman has been in their radar for a while and this summer could finally be when the deal goes through.

Aouar is a 20-year-old midfielder who can be deployed anywhere across the centre of the park but is at his best when utilised as the anchor midfielder, who is allowed the time and space to start plays for his side. Supremely sharp and composed on the ball, the youngster boasts excellent ball control as well as a keen eye for the through ball.

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Aouar was promoted to the first team in the summer of 2016 as a teenager and since then, his progress has been at an alarming rate.

His footballing attributes have certainly developed while it’s quite clear that his mental instinct has improved greatly since he started playing regular first-team football.

The Frenchman likes to collect the ball from the defenders and look for the best pass in front of him.

While he usually gets his passes spot-on, he also has the ability to beat a player on two by showing a sudden burst of pace. Quite strong in terms of technicality, Aouar boasts very quick feet which he uses to advantage on every possible occasion as well. 

The highly-rated midfielder has played in 35 league games for Lyon this season and his return of 7 goals and 7 assists is extremely respectable for a central midfielder.

Still only 20, Aouar still has a massive future ahead of him and if he continues to progress at this pace, he’ll be one of the best in the world very soon.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has a keen eye for players like that and he’s realised that Aouar has that special something about him. He has added the young Frenchman to his summer wish list and when Manchester City come calling for a player, they aren’t usually turned down. 

City have their own issues to deal in the middle of the park to be fair as the ages of star men Fernandinho and David Silva will remain a nagging worry on the back of his head.

Aouar could be best described as the ideal mix of all the positives from both the aforementioned players, making him the ideal choice for this City side.

While he isn’t a proven product and would certainly need some grooming before he’s ready to challenge in the English game, Pep Guardiola could be the perfect man to guide him down the right path. His rate of development would increase even more than right and that’s a scary prospect to even think about.
