Manchester City Opinion: Why City should make a move for Joao Cancelo?
According to a report from Tuttosport, both Manchester City and Manchester United are keen to sign Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo this summer.
Joao Cancelo, 24, has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, bagging one goal and three assists. The Portuguese played a major role in guiding Juventus to the Serie A title for an eighth straight season, but he has been unable to nail down a regular place in the team, with manager Max Allegri preferring Mattia De Sciglio often in bigger games.
Manchester United want Cancelo to replace Antonio Valencia, who will be leaving the club in the summer transfer window. But Manchester City should beat their cross-town rivals to the signature of the 24-year-old full-back to bolster their defensive options ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
City have the second best defence in the Premier League this season, with the likes of Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker, Vincent Kompany, John Stones and Oleksandr Zinchenko playing a key role in establishing a strong backline. The full-backs have been a key to the Cityzens’ success over the last couple of years, thriving in Pep Guardiola’s attacking system.
Kyle Walker has been Guardiola’s first choice at right-back, but the England international’s form has dipped this season. Yet, he has been continually backed by the City tactician. Walker’s deputy is Danilo, who has failed to live up to the expectations of the fans, offering very little competition. Maybe, that could be the reason why Walker’s form has dipped this season.
Thus, signing Cancelo would be a step in the right direction from Guardiola. He is considered to be one of the best in the world and not only will he bolster City’s backline, but also add much-needed competition and cover for Walker. The Portuguese is an attacking right-back, who is blessed with immense pace, agility and athleticism.

The 24-year-old loves taking on his marker and beating him with his burst of pace. A good crosser of the ball, Cancelo is no slouch when it comes to defending. He can defend well in 1v1 situations using his tackling and interception skills.
