Manchester United Opinion: Signing Idrissa Gueye will toughen their midfield
According to a recent report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are said to be looking for ideal candidates to replace the departing likes of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini in the midfield. It has been suggested that Everton star Idrissa Gueye has emerged as a potential candidate for the role at Old Trafford.
While the departure of Fellaini didn’t hit the United faithful too hard, the news of Ander Herrera’s move away from Old Trafford shook the fan-base and the dressing room.
He’s been a loyal servant at United for quite a few years now and he’s played a crucial role in keeping them afloat even when things were as horribly as they could be.
They boast the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba as midfield options but it is being suggested that they’re looking add more depth in this position.
With no Champions League football to attract players again next season, United will not be able to lure talent from the biggest clubs in the world because of the difference in the immediate level of ambition.
They have looked completely toothless at times and the transition from defence to attack has been boringly slow. With no apparent link between the midfield and the attack, they have struggled to even string passes together at times during the campaign – under the managership of both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho earlier in the season.
The addition of a strong presence in midfield will be one of the summer priorities at Old Trafford and they are simply convinced that Everton’s Senegalese international midfield destroyer is the right man for the job. Idrissa Gueye has been a revelation since making his move to Everton from Aston Villa in 2016.
The 29-year-old has made starting role his own at Goodison Park and his contributions to the Toffees side have been massive over the years.
Capable of breaking up any forward play with his razor-sharp instincts, Gueye offers a certain degree of defensive stability – something that United have been lacking for a long time now.

He is also an excellent passer of the ball and although he doesn’t score too many goals, his effect on any side will be quite easy to see.
The energy he brings to the middle was visible in each of 33 Premier League appearances he made this season and signing him would be an excellent move by Manchester United.
