Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should take a punt on Pedro

According to a report from Globe Esporte, Manchester United are interested in signing Fluminense forward Pedro Guilherme this summer. But Fluminense President Pedro Abad has decided that he will not sell the Brazilian forward before the June 8 early election.

Pedro Guilherme, 21, has turned heads with his performances in South America over the last couple of years. He was close to joining Real Madrid before sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury that required him to undergo surgery.

Since recovering from the knee ligament damage, the Brazilian has scored two goals in six games. The report claims Inter Milan and Atalanta have also watched Pedro, who has a contract with the Fluminense until July 2021.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are set for a summer upheaval under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Red Devils are in dire need of reinforcements having only managed to finish sixth in the Premier League this season.

Solskjaer is trying to build a squad full of young, hungrier and exciting players that can take the club back to the top of the league. And the Norwegian is close to sealing his first signing of the summer, with the Daily Star claiming Swansea City winger Daniel James set for medical this week after agreeing on a £15m move.

Daniel James’ signing will represent United’s change in transfer policy of signing marquee players post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. The Red Devils have lacked a natural wide player to operate down the right-hand side for some time and there’s hope that the Welshman can become a first-team regular next season.

But United also need a clinical striker, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku all struggling for consistency this past campaign, while Alexis Sanchez has been a disaster since joining from Arsenal last year. That being said, should Solskjaer go for Fluminense’s Pedro?

Without a doubt, yes! There might be reservations regarding his fitness following the cruciate ligament damage but now that he has achieved full fitness and is in the squad for Toulon tournament, United should go for him.

Pedro is rated as one of the most deadly young forwards in Brazil. The 21-year-old will undoubtedly bolster United’s attacking ranks, as he will potentially bring in pace, power and strength to the team. There’s no doubting his finishing ability in front of goal, as well as his work-rate off the ball and quality in transition.

Verdict

The absence of Champions League football will surely dent United’s pursuits of world-class players, but Solskjaer doesn’t need them. The 46-year-old manager is rebuilding the squad and his idea of doing it with young, exciting and committed talents is indeed the right way.
