Why Manchester United should make a move for Tottenham’s Harry Winks

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United are plotting a summer swoop for Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks.

Harry Winks, 24, has worked his way through Tottenham’s academy before breaking into the first team in 2014. He is now an important member of Tottenham’s first-team squad and has started 16 of the 20 Premier League games he has featured this season. The Englishman has impressed under Jose Mourinho, starting the last five league games in a row.

The report adds that Paul Pogba will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season and Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Ed Woodward to use some of the money from the Frenchman’s sale to sign Winks from Tottenham.

Pogba, 26, has missed the majority of the campaign with ankle problems, managing only eight appearances in a Red t-shirt. The French World Cup winner is now recovering from an ankle operation but his time at United is likely to be over in the summer. (h/t the Daily Mirror)

The 26-year-old’s absence has been dearly felt as Solskjaer’s United lie ninth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. The Red Devils have lacked quality in the midfield department following the exits of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera last year. They signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January, with Solskjaer managing to add some quality to his one-paced midfield.

However, with Pogba set to leave the club, United will need to replace the Frenchman before the start of 2020/21 campaign. Harry Winks may not be a like-for-like Pogba replacement but he would be a quality addition to the Red Devils’ midfield.

The 24-year-old has managed 128 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, scoring just two goals. He has had his fair share of injury problems over the last two seasons but the midfielder has performed extremely well this campaign under Mourinho. At 24, the England international has the requisite experience in the Premier League and is at the right age to move to a bigger club like United.

Winks is versatile as he can play in different positions across the midfield. He has also become a member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, having earned six caps until now. The central midfielder has the potential to succeed at Old Trafford and Solskjaer should take advantage of that.

Verdict

Winks has shown his ability to perform at a higher level and would be a valuable asset to the team if he is able to replicate the same form he has shown at Tottenham. Therefore, United must do everything to their powers and sign the England international to bolster their midfield unit.
