Why Man United should move for Gianluca Busio as one for the future

According to claims from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, as relayed by the Mirror, Man United have been credited with an interest in wonder kid Gianluca Busio, who currently plies his trade with Sporting Kansas City in the Major League Soccer. 

Sporting Kansas’ director of scouting in Europe, Edward Burleson, has revealed that the likes of Man United and Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan are keeping close tabs on the 17-year-old, who recently caught the eye for the United States at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil (Tuttomercatoweb h/t Mirror).

Born in North Carolina, USA, to parents of Italian heritage, Gianluca Busio is a box-to-box midfielder with a great technique.

The Greenboro-born ace burst on to the scene at Sporting Kansas City in the 2018 edition of the MLS. Busio only made 8 appearances in his debut season but he really established himself in a more substantial role in the recently-concluded 2019 campaign, scoring thrice and assisting once in 22 league appearances for Sporting Kansas City.

The 17-year-old has already represented the United States at U15 and U17 levels but he still remains eligible to switch his international allegiance to represent Italy at the senior level.

Besides impressing in a box-to-box central midfield role, Busio has also illustrated the versatility to play in various other roles, having already featured as a winger over the course of his fledgeling career in the MLS.

To put things into perspective, Man United have put a lot of emphasis on their youth recruitment drive under the stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gianluca Busio could be yet another exciting addition to the existing pool of burgeoning young talents at Old Trafford. 

The Red Devils have been scouring the continent for bright emerging prospects over the past 12 months, with wonder kids Hannibal Mejri, Mateo Mejia and Noam Emeran joining the academy in recent times. 

United have certainly made great strides to improve competition for places across various age-group levels with the acquisition of several top-quality prospects from far corners of the globe. To that end, the 17-year-old certainly looks like a quality talent with the raw materials to evolve into a future star.

Verdict

Busio is still in his formative years and the Red Devils have every reason to fancy their chances of moulding the 17-year-old to suit the demands of playing in English surroundings. 

Academy prospects like Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, Tahith Chong, James Garner and Angel Gomes have all benefitted from Solskjaer’s policy of blooding youngsters in the first-team and Busio could also get his chance to impress if a move to Old Trafford does materialize in the upcoming transfer window.
