Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils must sign Adrien Rabiot?
According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are weighing up an offer for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
The Frenchman, 24, has not featured for PSG since December and was banned from their title celebrations. Adrien Rabiot is set to leave the club on a free in the summer, with Manchester United now interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils’ failure to qualify for the Champions League does leave them at a major disadvantage against competitors for Rabiot, who has also been linked with Real Madrid. But that should not deter Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he must go all out to sign him.
Manchester United are planning a major rebuild of their squad after a testing campaign and Solskjaer wants young, hungrier and exciting talents, with the midfield an area of particular concern.
Ander Herrera has already left Old Trafford after his contract with the club expired, while Andreas Pereira and Juan Mata could follow suit. Paul Pogba, meanwhile, is being heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid and Nemanja Matic’s form tailed off alarmingly during the business end of the campaign.
Matic’s form and fitness has been of particular concern for Solskjaer, as the Serbian midfielder looks on his last legs. He is always reliable in possession, though, inclining towards keep it safe always before laying it off sideways or backwards. One sticking point is that the 30-year-old rarely makes risky passes due to his passing being conservative.
In Solskjaer’s system, the deep-lying midfielder should be quick, intelligent and adept at breaking the lines with his passing from deep. And those traits don’t exactly go with Matic, who will turn 31 in August. Thus, its important Solskjaer brings in a replacement for the ageing Serb this summer and Adrien Rabiot will fit that profile perfectly.
A left-footed deep-lying playmaker, Rabiot possesses an impressive passing range, as well as excellent vision. He is extremely composed in possession, can shield the backline well and break the lines with his creative passing. The Frenchman isn’t exactly speedy and agile, but he makes it up with his positioning and aerial ability.
A silky operator, the 24-year-old would undoubtedly help United improve upon the fluidity of their play through the middle of the pitch. With Rabiot at the base of the midfield, the likes of Pogba and McTominay or Fred will get the license to influence the play more in the final third.
Verdict
Rabiot is an extremely talented player and ready-made for the Premier League, meaning he could be a smart addition for Manchester United.
