Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should go for Ruben Dias?
According to a report from the Record, Manchester United are said to have opened talks over a move for Benfica star Ruben Dias. (h/t the Daily Mail)
The Portuguese defender, 21, has been a key player for Benfica this season, starting 30 Primeira Liga games, plus 11 more in Europe. The report claims Ruben Dias has a €60million release clause, though Juventus are currently in pole position for his signature.
That being said, Manchester United should accelerate their pursuit for the defender before it becomes too late.
United’s need for a central defender has been further documented in the last few weeks, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side leaking 11 goals in 5 games across all competitions.
Barcelona dumped the Red Devils out of the Champions League by scoring four goals across both the legs, while Everton gave them a 4-0 hiding at the Goodison Park. Manchester City coasted to a 2-0 success at Old Trafford last week, whereas another error from David de Gea cost United two points in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend.
In simple terms, United’s defence needs a major overhaul, with 50 goals conceded this season their worst record since the Premier League’s inception. Of the current defence, only Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof possess the requisite quality to take United forward, with Solskjaer needing at least two top pedigree centre-halves ahead of the next season.
One of them has to be Ruben Dias, who’ll be a straight upgrade over the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo. The Portuguese has been a star performer for Benfica and has rightfully caught the attention of a host of elite European clubs.
A technically gifted centre-back, Dias is a classy operator of the ball, can bring the ball out from the back with ease and initiate attacks with his fantastic distribution. He is a physically imposing defender and his ability to drive with the ball from defence will bring a whole new element to United’s build-up play.
The 21-year-old’s combination of aerial dominance, technical abilities and tackling skills would offer a fresh impetus to Solskjaer’s side’s ability to start attacks from defence.

The Red Devils need to recruit a leader at the back, as well as an organiser with the ability to guide the backline like Rio Ferdinand. And Dias could exactly be that defender to take United forward next season.
