Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should avoid signing Cavani

Manchester United are in regular contact with Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani’s entourage as they plot a summer swoop for the striker, reports the Metro.

The Uruguay international, 32, has a contract at PSG until the summer of 2020, yet there has been no talk of a contract extension between the player and the club. The 32-year-old has been a long-term target for Manchester United and there is a belief that they could land him this summer, adds the report.

If PSG are reluctant to offer Edinson Cavani an extension to his current contract, they’ll likely look to sell him at the end of this season in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer of 2020. That being said, should the Red Devils make a move for the Uruguayan in the summer?

Seven defeats in nine matches have left United three points outside the Premier League’s top four and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having only just been appointed, is under no illusions as to how big the task is in front of him.

Solskjaer’s side were swept aside by cross-town rivals Manchester City on Wednesday night, just three days after a humiliating 4-0 thrashing at Everton.

The pressure is now firmly on the Norwegian, who was rewarded with the permanent job last month after winning 14 of his 19 matches in charge on an interim basis. The Red Devils’ squad is in serious need of an overhaul in the summer and that was evidently clear following their results in the past two games.

Before Solskjaer is judged, however, he must be given time to build his own squad with his own targets. The club has to prioritise strengthening the defence, which has leaked a staggering 50 goals in 35 games this season.

Focus must then turn on adding more firepower to the attack, as none of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata can be relied upon to deliver the goods consistently. Plus, Romelu Lukaku has already hinted he could leave the club for Serie A, citing it as ‘a dream’.

That itself tells how far the 20-time Premier League champions have fallen and why they need a clinical striker from next season.

But Cavani isn’t the solution to United’s goalscoring woes. The Uruguayan has enjoyed another solid campaign in front of goal for PSG, helping the team win yet another Ligue 1 title. Despite his own goalscoring talent, he doesn’t fit into Solskjaer’s system and is already 32.

Verdict

United need fresh, fast and exciting players in the summer to take the club forward. Cavani is one of the top strikers in Ligue 1 and has accomplished so much in Paris, but he is a player the Reds should avoid signing.
