Man United Opinion: Red Devils should go all out to sign Keylor Navas this summer

According to the Express, Man United are weighing up a move for Real Madrid shot-stopper Keylor Navas in the summer, as the Red Devils prepare for life without star man David de Gea.

The Express also understands that United are reluctant to meet de Gea’s
£350,000-a-week wage demands and contract talks between the player and the club have so far failed to reach a positive end, with Ligue 1 giants PSG lining up a move for the Spaniard at the end of the season.

Navas, who made his move to Real Madrid from La Liga outfit Levante, served as the first-choice keeper at the Bernabeu for four seasons and helped the Los Blancos to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles under the stewardship of Zinedine Zidane.

However, the 32-year-old Costa Rican international has slipped down the pecking order this season following the arrival of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea last summer, making only 9 starts in the La Liga.

The veteran has made a total of 161 appearances for the Los Blancos in all competitions till date, managing an impressive 52 clean sheets.

Often regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Latin American history, Navas has earned a total of 86 caps for Costa Rica so far, representing his nation at 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and two CONCACAF Gold Cups.

The 32-year-old produced a string of impressive performances between the sticks to help Costa Rica to the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Express also reports that Navas has been told that he doesn’t feature in new manager Zinedine Zidane’s plans for the upcoming season and it is understood that a goalkeeper of his calibre is unlikely to accept the role of a glorified bench-warmer.

To put things into perspective, Man United would strike gold by getting the experienced Costa Rican international on their books this summer and he is certainly good enough to fill in the boots of David de Gea at Old Trafford.

Navas, 32, is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and there is no reason why the Red Devils should not look at him as their No.1 between the sticks for the foreseeable future.

United are set for a massive squad overhaul this summer, as Ole Gunnar Solskjer looks to get rid of deadwood and build for the future. Reinforcements at centre-back, right-back and right-wing should be high on the manager’s wishlist but he should also make it a priority to sort out the team’s goalkeeping problems.

Given that de Gea has come under plenty of criticism for some high-profile and uncharacteristic errors over the last month or so, it would be better for United to cash in him on this summer rather than risk losing him for absolutely nothing in a year’s time.

Moreover, the Red Devils cannot rely on the likes of Sergio Romero and Lee Grant to take over the gloves next season, as neither of them is good enough for the No.1 role at Old Trafford.

Keylor Navas has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Madrid and he would bring that winning mentality to United, who are currently in dire need of some motivation, both on and off the pitch. Navas is not only a charismatic leader at the back but he is also a very fine goalkeeper with well-rounded attributes, who has achieved everything at the highest level.

The fans at Old Trafford have every reason to look forward to Navas as their next No.1 between the sticks, though it remains to be seen whether he eventually signs for United, particularly with the club looking set to miss out on Champions League football next season.
